important observation you’ve ever made in your life?” – Sean, I think the biggest observation I ever made in my life was I needed to really trust my intuition over what I was being sold by anybody. From my parents to my teachers to the television. I just, you know, I always talk about betting on your strengths. You know, for me, and you know, maybe most people are different. Like, everyone’s different, but for me, you’re asking me, the #AskGaryVee Show, that’s
why we called it that. For me, it was just
somewhere in my early teens, it was just obvious to
me that I was right. And I know that’s an
obnoxious thing to say, but my happiness and success always followed me going down the path that seemed obvious to me, yet I was confused why everybody else wasn’t, it wasn’t, besides my mom, it wasn’t so obvious too. And so I, that’s what I would say. I would say that’s my answer because observation was I was right, don’t be scared of what that meant, have the confidence to
follow through with that, don’t hedge, don’t, respect other people’s points of view. Have the humility that has been such an important balance to the gift of the intuition, but never
waver, never waver.

when it comes to news media bias versus fact reporting?” – Daniel, this is a
tough question brother. I mean I don’t think I have the answer. Everybodys got their agenda. Humans are flawed by nature. Everybody is gonna put their spin on it. What I’m really upset about is watching people only gravitate to the
people that are like minded. I take enormous pride in the fact that I’ll watch MSNBC, CNBC, Fox. I remember for a year there
I was streaming Al Jazeera not because that I believe
in any one people’s hyperbole, it’s just fun to contextualize. Maybe I’m affected by the fact that I grew up in a communist country, and my mom wrote a book
report that the Fidel Castro was the bravest man in the world. Because that was the spin that she got of what he was doing
in Cuba against the US. If you’re self-aware
enough to know that people are driving their agenda, and that’s just the way it is, then what you do is you
start hedging everything, and it creates some level of balance. I think it’s about being open minded and trying to challenge yourself to see it from multiple perspectives, but at some level I think we trust the people that most talk
about the things we talk about. I think that at some level
can be slightly dangerous, especially now in a social
media, digital content, media at scale world. There’s so many more voices
that can be completely for us. I wanna challenge you
VaynerNation to make sure once a day, once a
week at least once a month you’re reading heavily with an open mind the counter point to
the things you believe. – [Voiceover] Homeinstead

asks, “What three values “do you hold highest in life?” – Eddie this is a great question. You know, I don’t know
if I have three values that I hold, I’ll just
start rattling off things that I really appreciate. You know, I think the
first, you know, thing, and I don’t know if this is in any order, but I’m a humongous fan of patience. Lack of patience has caused so many people from not achieving the
upside that they deserve, and that kills me. You know, the value of (spits) this. Word is bond, I think really matters. I think, you know, having
somebody in your life that you just know that you can trust because when they say
they’re gonna do something, they do it, and then in a weird way, contradicting that, but not really, I’m a huge fan of somebody who’s nimble and empathetic, because when
you really think about it, I, for example, am telling
you that I love (spits) word is bond, but then when somebody actually (spits) does that,
and doesn’t deliver on it, in a weird way, I’m okay with it. And I’m very attracted to
that own characteristic within myself, because
I think I understand that even though you really wanted to, you know, something
happened that made you not, and I want to dig into why, and so I think nimbleness, or empathy is
very, very, very important. I think people that are grateful
are extremely attractive, you know, nothing’s more ugly to me than somebody who’s spoiled, and I think, you know, at some level,
hypocrisy is the thing I hate the most in the world. So, the opposite of that,
which is maybe (spits) that, or I don’t know, but those
are things that come to mind. – [Voiceover] Chris asks,

“White lies. “Do you believe the hype? “It seems you can’t win in business “without bending the truth.” – Dan, this is a really intense question. I want you to show India right now, because I’m giving her props for navigating the
questions and finding stuff. This question is one that I’m really struggling to figure out what the right answer is, which leads to the answer which is, appropriate embellishment feels appropriate at times to me, but I’m scared to say that out loud. If you feel like you’re growing into it within weeks or maybe maximum a couple of months, I think it’s okay. Right? Like, I feel comfortable
saying VaynerMedia’s a 450-person agency right now even though we’re 417, but we have 59 job openings, and I expect this to be 450 by the time the far majority of people watch this episode or listen to it, right? So, I guess that’s where I’m willing to go. I’m not willing to say we’re 7,000. I’m not willing to say we’re 1,000. I think fake it ’til you make it is a very scary line that I think most people struggle with, but you know, we live in a transparent world. Like, the reason I even say this answer is ’cause I’m always trying to correct myself, ’cause I’m scared to, like, get called out for, you’re losing all your credibility by getting called out on something. So, it’s a very fine line. I think the intent matters. For me, I’m just going in speed, rounding out numbers, I’m going fast. Not trying to trick you to think we’re bigger than we are. So I would answer you a couple things. One, white lies that become truths within a very quick or
short period of time feel a little more comfortable, and the intent of the white lie. If you feel like, if you feel like you’re not
trying to do the wrong thing, that you’re gonna be able to
deliver for the other person, you just wanna tip them over in their own, you know it’s so funny, with my clients, I think they get so much more benefit working with us than the alternative that I’m like, I feel like I’m helping them along. I feel like it’s in their
best interest, not mine. Of course there’s a secondary
best interest of mine, and it’s funny, I tend to not, you all right? What’s that? (laughs) Are we meeting?
– Yes. – I’m running just a few minutes late. Do you wanna say hi to the VaynerNation? – Hi guys! I’m Claire. – Um, you know, I think that it’s all about like every other answer which is, it needs to have the right intent and it needs to be appropriate. So, that’s what I got. – Hey, Aimee. – My question is the following. What’s the most important
thing you’ve learned while growing your company at VaynerMedia from East Coast to West Coast, and how does a company successfully scale? – You know, thanks Aimee. You know, it’s funny, I never
opened a second Wine Library so opening a second
office in San Francisco and a third in L.A. has been
a new phenomenon for me. And quite honestly,
there’s challenges in it. You know, obviously I
wanna be everywhere, right. And that matters so much, but look, even at VaynerMedia I’m not sure the last time I’ve been on the 15th floor. Everybody’s asking for an
episode of the 15th floor. I don’t remember, I haven’t
been on the 15th floor in a week, in a month, excuse me. It’s a challenge when
you’re one human being and so for me so much of it is high touch and kinda the way I wanna scale. Aimee, to answer your second part, how do you scale a company? I actually think you scale a company by doing unscalable things. Because I really believe you have to know your business. So at Wine Library I didn’t
need a lot of people, and it was about selling wine. Thus it was a different company. Here, we sell people. We sell our hours against a scope and our thinking and
so all I got is people. And so for me, scaling this company has been doing everything
that’s unscalable. Which is sitting down
and mentoring one by one spending as much time as I can. And trying to empower
people to feel comfortable with coming to me. Now, starting to build
out an H.R. department after a nine month search. Finding Minnie and
saying, this is a person I’m willing to build and
has the natural nuisances to build the culture and the H.R. and E.Q. that I want for this organization. And then having people
that have been with you for three and a half years, you can show Emily
again, and you can wave, and so moving her into to H.R. department as you just heard earlier. So Aimee, for me scaling
this company because I know. Look everybody who has a
business has to understand what business they’re building. And no matter what you do,
it’s always about people. When you’re an agency or client services, it’s extreme people which is so, for me the way to really scale it has been deeply entrenching myself into the people that work with me, for me, along side me, and that’s very important to me. Um, the West Coast
offices dynamic, you know, Alena, if you’re watching
more Skpye sessions. You know how I feel about that. It’s more communication, communication is the backbone of this whole execution and so more time, more physical time. Something Lizzie and I are speaking about. How much time I’m gonna
spend on the West Coast in 15 and 16 is a big commitment to me. So just hacking, hacking away at the thing that matters the most which is do I have a
relationship with all 400 people. And when it’s 4,000 people,
do I have a relationship with all 4,000 people. And I understand the
cynicism that one could have listening to that answer. Like how could you possibly have that? And the way you have it is by having a relationship with the first 40 people. Then having it with the next 400 people. Because the stunning amount of some of the people in this room, and some of the people outside this room, and in San Francisco and L.A., the stunning amount of people that now help me scale, because when somebody struggling or screw this
place, or I don’t believe Gary, they’re quick to jump
in and tell 400 stories about why it’s the other way which then gives that person the ammo to maybe jump in and
relook at the situation a different way, and that can. I always say the truth
is undefeated. Right? And so, for me scaling it is by, by delivering for your teammates.

Thoughts on fake views?” Oxygen clearly in a world now where it’s much more transparent and people can dig. And it’s not just, 20/20 has exposed you, Steve, what do you say about your fake views? – I don’t know. – Ya know, that world, where it’d happen once
in a while, is over. Now we live in a TMZ kind of world. Bloggers, Gawker, like, faking
it is such a dangerous thing. I mean, what hurts your
credibility is the lying. It’s amazing what people can actually get away with it in our society if they own it. We don’t care about the adultery. We don’t care about the faking it. We care about when you’re exposed, you lying about it. It’s nuts, it’s an interesting psychology, especially here in the States. More so than, maybe,
other parts of the world. To me it’s basically faking it. And more importantly, like, what about sleeping at night? Ya know, like, it’s kinda
fun to sleep at night. Especially today, I’m under the weather, by the way, everybody. So if my energy level
is a little bit lower, I apologize.

so ridiculously jealous that you’re 21. It makes me wanna vomit on myself. I always say that I’d give up everything to be 21, and I mean it. The knowledge would be tough to give up, but I think I mean it. Time is the asset. I wrote a piece about
what I would do if I was a real estate agent on
Linked In about Twitter. Be in the links. Searching on Twitter is gold, and then just putting out content. There’s some guy early on in 2009 when I wrote Crush It! who completely jumped
on it, and crushed it as a real estate agent putting
like a flip cam on his car while he drove, but the truth is it’s putting out content
and it’s using Twitter as an offense. Enjoy. (hip hop instrumental beats)
