– Hey Gary, it’s midnight
here in Israel so I figured I’d use this filter. My question is, how do
you grow an audience on Snapchat? Do you have to go Facebook
and Twitter to tell followers? – That was basically the
question, “how do you grow “an audience on Snapchat?” So Snapchat has no natural
in Snapchat app discovery, which is f-ing with a
lot of people’s heads, because they’re like “what the
hell, where’s the suggested “user list, where can I
search, how do I run ads? “I can’t grow,” of course you
can, you grow the old way. Pre-internet apps infrastructure,
you use other things to grow your business. I built this business using
a newspaper and a radio and other things of that
nature, so the answer is absolutely, I think he was going there. I mean, watch my behavior,
it’s not super complicated. I’m using my Twitter,
my email, my Facebook, my Instagram, to drive
awareness towards my channel. I’m hitting up, I mean I don’t
think I remember throwing this many right hooks outside
of a book ask, which is weird because I’m doing
that right now as well. Dropping March eighth, go get it. I’ve asked plenty of people
and they’ve sent me emails, like “oh, you’ve really
helped my Snapchat.” These are historically emails
that I would reply to and say “thanks, have a great day.” Now I say, “hey in your
next story, shout out “my @garyvee handle.” I’m going in for the ask,
how about the bottom of your email signature? How about your user name on
Instagram, go look at mine. You hack to build awareness for it. You think about billboards
and print, where there’s no click or permalinks or
anything of that nature, no. It’s just awareness drives,
you didn’t have to move, it’s got a wide angle, dammit. I was trying to make you move. – [DRock] I know. – I was very impressed
with you there DRock. That was a standoff that you
won, which pisses me off. Where you drive awareness
to your handle, so yes, any means of awareness,
I mean soon I’m gonna put a sign in here that says
“follow Gary on Snapchat.” So yes, that’s the answer,
using other platforms to drive awareness to get
followers from that platform. But scalable ones, email
signatures, your Linkedin account, look at my Instagram
profile, things like that. – [Voiceover] Kyle asks,
“When you are hustling,

relationships to your social media and
you should do the same for customers and employees to follow many of your
employees and like comment on their personal content traditional management
which they know what they eat I follow is laughing when employees like were
closer we get to spend more time but obviously places imagine that it may be
entering the CD for four months and then I’ll show up on her Instagram and say
yeah and looked like her and her boyfriend you like this the creepiest
shit about type look I’m not following any company you because I’m not scared
of being sued because I we believe in my life that intent trumps everything like
you can sue on anything you like anything at anytime about anything I’m
so so the answer is held i sees the end what he say how does this say what is it
he says that that I watch a lot of the content of the ones putting on a
reference Lego India’s putting up like ok but does it look nice picture looks
something like you like lately nonetheless like I’m seeing what
everybody’s doing and there’s a lot to see it as funny stuff but don’t get a
public domain right like you know on Instagram they have to accept me if they
want to follow me like I don’t feel like I’m intruding because it’s the rules of
the game I’m watching I’m watching this I want to know them better to bring them
more my intent is to follow so I can make it better for them not show up on
your fired you drink beer too late at night intent is what trumps everything and
then I engagement coming from a good place and they get pumped like a lot of
employees are happy when I engage cause I think it’s cool and like my bosses you
know like you know to me like so I just think intention so yes I follow yes I
engage i dont give you a lot because I do have respect for like everybody views
these things definitely some tribes smart I don’t think anybody
uncomfortable but my intent is pure is sure you know what I want to be good I’m
doing it for good and so I’m not scared executives income companies are bad
often they don’t care about the employees of their intent is bad hey we need to cut fifty people from
payroll this year we let swallow people’s social and blame them for blood
that’s what happens when things going on that’s going on but not everywhere but
that’s that’s in can’t do anything you want like you know companies are highly
regulated Pharma financial they’re scared of the government’s suing them
stood up mad at the cut employees they’re just doing governance so that
they don’t become exposed as the company so I understand why I have letter of
intent if you are a financial service and your monitoring your people and your
not letting them use social media because the government makes you feel
that you’ll be fined for doing something that’s not intended to bad just protect
that got it but don’t look at a tactics freely back to the intent wright also do
anything ok but your police might not be not
awesome it might be more vulnerable things maybe our CEOs also scared of
those kind of maybe but up massively bored one day my
career I take a step back and change and 10th always changing Ask Gary are you more of a delegator or
micro manager can’t wait for the UK book

it why change I guess we talked about
this the other day rate like you know like that’s fine article right there was
a daily before they’ll be for sale by the way he’s won the the way we thank
security if there’s no I would have won it going on right now if this than that
it’s a product you should all check it out it’s tremendously efficient thing I
talked about in upcoming article but I answer here on the show for you as well
I don’t like when automation replaces something that should be done by a human
right I don’t like when the guy named Gary started showing up on e-mail
newsletters with like a different thought Gary cuz I tried to seem like it
was personal I don’t like when you’re not authentic to the audience to the
exclusion we have currently couple things one I like the way crops the
picture accordingly to Twitter so that works for
me comes from Instagram proposing a lot to them by hand and you know what
actually was my phone you got it right now check this out guys this is actually
happening in real time right now it’s even on my phone right now I was about
to do about it in time let me tell you why I’m ok with it so these are the two
images one for Twitter 14 Instagram and the copy for me to post right now on my
social channels because dealing before just came out right so what I used to do
as I say these two I put on an interim type and I put one on Twitter to me
that’s not tricking the audience that just distributing content like even Facebook now I don’t
post any more weird you know cause I believe that Facebook fan pages have
become content like sites and it’s okay for us to schedule things of that nature
vs when you get a reply from me on Twitter
or were up when I reply in the comments of the any comment that is me because I
think it’s my profile if it’s a deep shock it’s just about authenticity and
the other thing that I have with the URL is not like Instagram you’re actually
lift something very clear that it’s coming from somewhere else i guess i
guess im hoping you know my answer of what should be automated and not I think
that things that are perceived as another huge as you human are doing them
by the end audience should not be automated but automation can work as
long as you’re not tricking and should work and can work with its contextual
content so to me it’s it’s really just a clarification of what I’ve always
believed which is if you’re faking the funk of doing something human with
automation that’s bad but if you’re doing it for efficiencies of time and
there’s no confusion by the end consumer then it’s good so I guess it’s an
evolution of the 2.0 version of my because I don’t think I’ve been clear in
the last decade of like you know thank you economy and things that I talked
about I do not think that you should have your assistant or another human
being reply as you efficiencies working
through a scary book you know gary is not you know and and the rest of Team
you know and Riley to come in and take my Gary V handle and reply to people to
buy books you gonna think that’s me they’re gonna use the Ask Gary me handle
but the automation of a photo that goes from Instagram to Twitter as a
distribution channel for that that is cropped problems of nature uncomfortable observing my body what are your thoughts
on buying a franchise business the show

peach a fatter something revolutionary had no idea but I do know this guy who
created who’s who in his team created mine is an extremely talented product
person I’ve been flirting with it I’ve been testing the peach a little bit and
what’s the fun I know you were all I was really weird I literally just that was a
one audience value prop statement I’m not ready to say that it’s gonna be here
forever the sin that clearly it’s a beautiful product clearly early tech
nerds fallen in love with it are playing with it it’s got my attention but very
little right now because of incomplete snapped up storm only so many hours in
the day but I’m gonna flirt with it over the next couple of weeks months watch
consumer behavior that sticky has been plenty of apps the cuts come out in the
tech world with enormous fan fair that have had 169 so it’s gonna be Plurk just
something a lot of you don’t remember from 2008 is going to DailyBooth change
and I thought was gonna be the biggest thing ever because my agents right
basically became Instagram but it didn’t win we’re gonna become interim steps yet
so I don’t know I’m excited about the chap chap still have a lot of room
especially something like this but you know a lot of users from the early
investor believing that product was revolutionary but not here anymore fully win and so you know it’s an
exciting thing I like watching new trends I do think so fun you should get
it in the corner here while i’m talking bout peach if I gotta
soon as a video on youtube or anything like this one looks like and things that
make sure so I guess you can edit that are repin I don’t give a shit that’s it
so that that’s by the way to bring value

has been around a few years why now
what’s changed Kevin I’ve done this a lot I did this
with Instagram as well I only get really loud in my career when I think things
hit that moment when word just a year away from mainstream I’m in love with
the moment when something is much bigger than people realize that means street
right before I went on to do the show right now I just retweet it that the
white house went on snapchat has always been a symbolic kind of thing
meeting other things I have a good understanding consumer behavior a
website in 1996 email marketing in ninety-seven Google AdWords starting
your YouTube show people are just what I bet you could google right now likewise
starting a YouTube shows a good idea I did that ten years ago Twitter change the course of my career I
wrote a book called crush it the basically speaks about everything
that’s going on right now on YouTube and buying an Instagram and snapchat the
reason passion now is even though two years ago I was like wow this snapshot
think is going to win the numbers are they are this is the moment right now
where I see that window of 12 to 18 months to really win grab at scale
before the whole market comes along and tries to do the same I believe that
that’s why so many of the people watching the show and watching my
content are gonna win many people that were already paying attention to me
because of what I did on YouTube focused on Twitter and Facebook pages and more
successful because I yell about Instagram as much because it was very
head down and then it was probably the one it happened so fast didn’t like it happened so fast that
even though it’s funny it’s why I know you ask me what you wanna do something
that peach I do it’s the incident happened so fast I didn’t have time to
like letting go mainstream and then talk about it so so why now cause its the
moment by moment and my moment is defined as the attention-grabbing moment which is
the moment one year before something goes completely mainstream where I think
something is big enough to really land grab and I’m not guessing and I’m not
wasting my time which is what a lot of people ask me like I do not we should
hire easy because I’m tasting things like peach and musically but I’m not all
in its funny a lot of you like what I see so I hear a lot of people think is
snapped up paying dario Gary investments that same year ago guys I care about my personal brand and
being right more than anything more than anything in the world in the white house
with all my might there’s no transaction that will trump me being this right historic sure that ghost stuff on
grabbing the ghost I mean what was this close to 100 episodes go look this isn’t
like like like this has been watching carefully calculating what do you think
all this is like by accident you think I got lucky you think if you
think it’s this thing I’m throwing random shit on the table you think I’m
predicting peaches gonna be number one in three years know it is understanding
it is a talent of understanding when things are on the dawn of complete
Mainstreet equity and so humble out right now because I’m gonna end up being
right she’s serious silence such a good
feeling right I like deep songs and yeah

wager Patriots are taking on your jets
today and I’ll betcha magnum of double back versus a bottle of your choosing to
my Patriots even with just my old backup quarterback playing him take down Ryan
Fitzpatrick and his beard next question for do you think there’s a tipping point
for Washington wines where the general population will realize what the wine
world news and that is that you can get better value better wine from washington
than you can from Napa go Patriots lot of fun drew let them play through so
what now the video can pop up while I’m on or not can have a cookout good so
true listen first of all thank you for
allowing me to win that bet expect to get that wine India ki work with the
mail to make sure I get that drink it on this show drew to give you one more shot
up exactly you make wonderful wine you can go back to 2001 a show of six at
like eight nine ten I’ve been a long huge advocate of Washington State waste
Unwin is is got a lot of ties to the world you know what drew I think much
like things in business I’m gonna take this into a business environment like I
think that what will tip Washington State wines are the same things that
tipped let you sit and talk about it took Ashton Kutcher going on Twitter and
challenging CNN to see who would be the first person to a million followers to
tip Twitter mainstream I believe what college did over november december
tipped it because I was affected by Mike Okri if he’s the biggest mean and he’s
doing stuff that’s in my genre and the date I’ve been seeing the last six
months that snapshots agent up this is what it takes like this is the
mainstream time and I go and I’m sure anybody’s watching marketing as I’ve
gone 10,000 marketers have gone and the just and then they’ve got groups under
them and so does tipping points Khalid for snapshot to go mainstream you know
we’ve been yelling about it for two years but he denied my actions have been
affected by that Russia India and Twitter and Washington State much like
the tasting in california where the Californian wines and 78 bpm the French wines and there was one
writer from time magazine Toronto remember exactly what it was that
covered it and everybody in america new W Washington State wine that comes along
that’s twenty bucks 15 bucks 80 bucks will do something President Obama could
have had a Washington state wine and everybody raved about it I know we did
but but likes but not just ronald reagan put one shoe California wanted to become
a cultural phenomenon like the next president could do it and for some
reason habits more likely a Kardashian could fall in love with the Washington
State wine and that becomes it there just a million things are you know digital million
things that they can come in many different directions but it’s gonna take
a pop culture moment drew for it to cross over something that everybody
knows about Counting Crows a in the wine world must read for years and just
started happening so it’s going to take something like that something that a
left field that we probably can’t think of just like it happens but I don’t
think anybody was thinking that a fifteen year deejay and hip-hop was
gonna be the person that kind of started changing the direction of a platform
that already had a hundred twenty-five million active monthly users that small
thing with Washington State they’ve been making great wines for twenty years but
it’s a pop-culture meme to get a gun if you look at Gary I’m 13 and raiding a
non-fiction book where do I start with

young people are two brands both in a
jar and consumers I got into it with a little bit on social media is awesome
and I understand where he’s coming from look at think young people or or
massively important I think it’s been very obvious if you look at the 45
social I would say Facebook and snap trap or shoot her Twitter different
winner was more time was never actually was young was very techy tumblr tumblr
Facebook Tumblr and snapshot 3 of what I would say are the five winners the other
two being Instagram and Twitter Instagram Twitter Twitter morteki nerdy
community that media in Surrey more photo different cut like a lot of
different people came together but if you look at the five social networks
that have popped in the in the last half decade the big billion dollar kind of
players three of them were built by the young generations think I actually this
is India in my mind I’m glad you’re here I wanna write a piece around the
Facebook and snapshot generations because I think they’re the only two
that’s what different languages were created right that’s what different
languages recreated I think there’s no I think Instagram was an iteration I don’t
think that was a Twitter generation there’s a Facebook generation and others
just not generous guys there’s not a single kid on campus in america that
isn’t ninety percent 70% 80% snapshot with some complimentary Instagram and
Anderson nothing else so that’s what’s going on I’m excited about young
people’s impacts on brands first up kind of ranting about what we were talking
about the center probably the context more talk about the snapshot kind of
thing as far as Prince it depends on the brand new market and sell 217 230 year
olds I think twelve to twenty year olds are very important for that brand I
think people aged down to what school and so i think thats where they become
important I think you’re selling your building and selling a brand I don’t
think a shampoo targeting moms should or is impacted by the young generation so I
think if your product is positioned to sell 80 30 that 13 to 22 is a bigger and more
important thing that I think people realize that if I was trying to sell to
1830 I wouldn’t start by marketing to 1832 marketing probably sixteen to
twenty to thirty might be here young so I think the beach about I think I think
brands and definitely social networks and bands have a lot of similar DNA that
way you little rusty they’re rethinking I like your establishing that you don’t
give a shit about Steve leaving without

“If you had an opportunity to
buy Instagram or Snapchat, “which one would you choose and why?” – Mmm, I sent you this one, because this one was challenging to me. I mean, look, these are
the two social networks. They are the two platforms that
live within a mobile device that people are giving their attention to. Actually let’s go round
the room real quick. Tim, Instagram or Snapchat,
what do you like better? You gotta pick one, one has to go away. – Probably Instagram, because
I wanna see myself forever. – Alright, Tim clearly establishing on the show it’s all about Tim. Britt? – Instagram, hands down. – Instagram, I like Instagram. – Yeah, so for me, I would
probably buy Snapchat. And here’s why, because of those answers. I truly believe that Instagram
is the social network of the moment. When I buy things, I
like to buy for 24, 36, 48 months out, when I invest. The way I built Vayner
Media, we were selling social media in 2009 and
10, you remember this, like, people didn’t want to buy this as much as they want to buy it now. I like projecting. Plus there’s one other
thing about Snapchat that makes me give this answer. Snapchat is a, I think that Instagram was a moving the ball forward in a Facebook, Twitter world. I think Snapchat is a complete
different paradigm shift. If it’s a completely
different way to communicate. It’s got different functionality. 30 to 40 year olds that have never used it are completely confused by it. I’m fascinated by that, that also feels to me like
there’s a lot of upside. I think a lot of 30, 40, 50 year olds understand how to use Instagram. It’s very native, it’s
basically like Facebook, boom, they’re there, that’s good. That’s the vulnerability of Snapchat, but I also think that’s the upside. If explained properly, which I think Twitter never
really fully accomplished, I think Snapchat becomes a beast. For me, watching the behavior, Snapchat is chipping
away on a daily basis. And only because of the way
I like to buy businesses, which is, what do I think
is the number one play, 24, 36 months from now? It’s Snapchat. That being said, I’m hedging against that, I’m not sold that Snapchat
is the biggest social network 24, 36 months from now,
because I do believe the Facebook, Instagram,
you know, WhatsApp, you know, Facebook Messenger monster is in its early stages. I am as bullish on
Facebook as I’ve ever been. And so that’s my answer,
that’s my rationale. – [Voiceover] Amanda asks,
“Do you use a meal prep service?

“why are VaynerMedia’s
social accounts so whatever? “Why are those outlets afterthoughts?” – That’s a really good
point, we decided to take on this question, it’s not a fun question. We are not doing a good enough job on the VaynerMedia account. It’s 100% my fault, we’ve
had people in the past at a good rotation when
we were two or three hundred people, I think
in 2016 it became a secondary priority as some of those people graduated to more senior
jobs or more responsibilities or something’s lost in translation. There’s two very interesting answers. So, first answer is, it wasn’t a priority. It stems from the top,
it lost it’s momentum and I didn’t create
infustructure to fix it. The second part’s
probably more interesting, which is our funnel of
applicants and high quality employees and new business is so high that we’re taking, it’s the
same reason I don’t think think Apple is a good advertiser. When you have the best product, in the same way I always say the greatest advertising in the world doesn’t fix your shit product, when you
have the best product the worst advertising doesn’t
hurt you as much either. It can hurt you a little
bit, I wouldn’t be naive to think that we maybe missed out on some clients because well, they’re not doing their own social
as well as they used to or could be, cause we
used to be best in class. And two, you know some
applicants were like well they don’t take that
serious so, yes I think we probably run on the
fact that I’m so strong and good at it, there is
that proxy the way you asked the question but it is, I
probably was willing to answer this question to shame myself
into fixing that in 2016. As a matter of fact India
I’m putting you in charge of shaming me, no not in charge
of the Vayner accounts but in charge of me putting
together the team in January that will start
executing in February. Or the system, because I
do have this idea of since we have so many employees
creating a calendar where one employee takes
over the account every day for the entire year, you like that? – [Brittany] I do like that. – That’s a clever little idea. It also , let them do whatever they do. You know I love to run it capitaistic, I’m not scared of anybody
doing innappropriate things. They’ll just get fired
and we’ll own up to it. It’s not super complicated. I hate when companies, this is a good way to answer something else. What are we gonna like check the content and give them a bunch
of handbooks and rules? No, if Marv sucks at it and
like puts up innappropriate pictures of himself, he’ll get fired. – I like when we were doing the Snapchats

behind why people are on periscope I saw
your interview with Marie for earlier recently where you talked about the
psychology of why people are on Pinterest and Twitter so I periscope
thanks huh welcomes me that like I think the
psychology on that is I think you’ll live TV right and are some people that
are gonna QVC or or Saturday Night Live I was got a lot of kick out of like a
short meeting theme is people I heard a ongoing conversation of the actors and
actresses that would not do Curb Your Enthusiasm because it was not structured
enough they were scared of the Improv nature SML and of course you know that
took spoke to me because I think I can crush those things but if you if there
was cue cards right now I can’t read or spell today on the Ask Gary B show
leaders so moist fascinated by people stinks because i think is great for
people that can improv just roll keep it sing and I think people want to project
themselves I think everybody’s fascinated with television and getting
out there so if you’re doing periscope you’re somebody who doesn’t fully take
themselves seriously end or you’re very confident in your improv and your troops
the reason I’m super into doing daily be and things of that nature is I’m not
scared how it’s gonna be edited the only the only reason even involved in setting
is sensitive information like lines and stuff of that nature but like clearly
like the balls but it’s so crazy I think about another 15 pounds and get a couple
more muscles like I’m getting closer just living like naked do that ok terrible reaction like it’s
cool you understand lets you make it as a yes I’ll probably not walk around
naked though it’s crossed my mind living life pretty naked and by the way I’m not
naive like we’ve all got Skelton’s plenty of things that I don’t share you
guys all know I don’t share my family like there’s a lot I like pushing myself
further and further because it is literally the last battle of a mile when
you take ownership of all your flaws and weaknesses you’ve won and I actually
think that’s the Nirvana of the connected world yes privacy is getting
pushed on yes negatives there’s a lot of positives with us all putting our
laundry to each other to get except that it’s not that high school to college the difference guys this is so basic but
the high school college and everybody likes not everybody but a lot of people
like college more is shortened to a place where you can only ship more
you’re sensitive to your zips and you really think there’s a lot of your shit
that happened between 14 and 18 change a lot we’re not ready to calibrate that
things very far and few between people that can own it all the way we’re
insecure our security is much stronger in our twenties that it is in our teens
and that’s what we like it better adam asks I feel like I’ve lost my
household help what do I do if anybody
