looking at some internships. I want to do media. Media analyst. – Okay, so here’s
what I would say. Where do you live? – [Andrew] In

to me and listen to me good. Reach out to 50 to 100
businesses in the Richmond, Virginia
area that have those roles or
needs and tell them that you’re willing to intern
for free or work after-hours in it or look for startups
’cause there’s ton in the Richmond, Virginia area,
tons of startups will take your 7 P.M. to 10 P.M.
hustle so you get a job that pays the bills and pay your student loans or
whatever you’ve got. I’ve got to be empathetic to the
practicality but then you go and switch from 7 P.M. to
10 at night and you go work for free at a startup and that becomes the experience
that you use to get a job in what you want to do. My man, what’s your first name?

of players that are young today is they’re fancy. They’re not willing to
back up their ambition. So, if you want this, if
you want to be a media analyst, if you want to
control your narrative, if you can’t get
a job by applying, then you’ve got to go to plan B. And plan B is to go work at a startup for free
from 7 to 10 P.M. so you build your resume and if
you crush it there and you’re so great, they’ll probably offer

First off, I want to start by thanking you for putting
out all that content. I’ve been an entrepreneur for
over five years now and I feel like that I am becoming
a better businessman, a better entrepreneur
thanks to your content and insight so thank you for that. This is my question. I’ve been working to get with a
few interns for couple years now and they’re always around
21-years-old and I feel that they’re lacking two
important skills. The first skill is critical
thinking or self-criticism. They should think about what
should I do first and what next. Why am I advising this? Is what I produced
really good enough? The second skill is
taking ownership. When all given tasks are
finished do they start thinking about what the next
best step could be? Do you have any idea how I,
as a boss, as a guides, can help them
develop their skills? Thanks. – Jelle, listen, I think that the answer to your question is the critique that you
are putting on them. You are critiquing them for
this kind of thoughtfulness, critical thinking and then
action and taking the initiative in being on the offense. My answer to you is you need to
do the same with you as a boss and you need to audit
yourself to do that. Meaning there is no reason
that you should be in a scenario where you’re struggling with
21-year-old interns for long period of time because the
truth is if you put the time and effort to really audit them and
really spend time with them and then decide for you whether
you’re right or wrong as the judge and jury, as the boss,
that they’re good or they’re not good you could speed up
this process very quickly. So my answer to you is go deep
and spend more time with them whether that’s virtually
or in reality or in real life where these interns are. Figure out if they’re good. Give them very detailed
feedback at scale. Suffocate all the excuses and
then make a decision whether that person should be in
your organization or not. For me, if I wanted to know if
anybody here should be in my organization or not it would
literally take me two days. Just make it the
thing you do today. Today you should decide
if these interns are capable, have the talent and
the capacity to deliver on your
expectations or not. Have you been clear in them
and move forward so I think the answer to your question is in
the same way that your upset with them that when
their task is done, they’re not doing
the next thing. I’m upset with you which is
if you slept last night you could’ve allocated some of those
hours to auditing your interns and giving them clear feedback
and making the decision if you wanted them here or not. Now I know what you did at

an Ivy League school, graduate and leverage that. But a true entrepreneur,
like father and brother, go out there and hustle, be a merchant. You know, that to me
is a crazy proposition to collect debt for in a 2016 world. So what I think they should
do instead is go work. Literally just go work,
I mean think about it, instead of going $80,000 in
debt, you can go work for $1 and be way up in the pot,
you can work for free and be on the way positive. And speaking of that, that
speaks to my next strategy. Go work for somebody,
a woman that you admire the way she did it and
take a lot less money working in her organization
than somebody else because you’re trying to
sap the IP out of her, out of that leadership. So not only go work, go work for the lowest
possible way you can survive. Go live with four roommates
in a studio apartment and eat fast food if you have too. You can go lose that weight
later, like the I did. The bottom line is you need to go work in an environment that inspires you and really you want it to be a place that you want to be like. To go work for somebody
that you want to be like is a tremendous value
proposition for an entrepreneur. When I think about what Andy and DRock have been affected by through osmosis, they’re probably scared to think about some of the tendencies they now have that are my tendencies
because I’ve affected it. It’s crazy how it works, it’s crazy, you should see the ego all 600 people at VaynerMedia walk around
with, it’s disgusting. But the bottom line is
it’s affected from the top so go work for somebody you
admire and want to replicate and regardless of the cost,

value for you and don’t take an internship at Facebook Apple where you

like you want to be like so that you can taste it so you can be close to it been asked to talk a lot of itself when

up on Twitter, email, other platforms, comments and YouTube, you must have a gadrillion. How many times have you in your career– When would you say that
you started really building into a place where people
were really pinging you? Is this now a two, three,
four year phenomenon for you? – For work? – Yes. Not for work, more like
people that are fans of you, clearly at this point. – It’s been a long time. – How long, do you think? – I mean, I think since the
first video I made went viral over 10 years ago. – Got it. So, it’s been pretty

randomly done stuff? Yes, met someone, got on a phone. How many times? – Now, if I could count that, Gary. More than I could ever keep track of. – That’s your answer. Who was the question?

as many times as possible. There are unlimited companies
in a world you can get to almost anybody because of Twitter, again, a true social network. More so than comments on content which a lot of other platforms are. Email, at this point, I
think has been played out. It’s harder to get to
people through email. But that will still work too. I think it’s stunning that you can get to most people in the world today. I don’t think people, as many people are as wired as you and I. I think people have drawn the line to no but there’s plenty. We’re not the only two nice guys believing in serendipity. There are tens of thousands
wildly accomplished CEOs, co-founders, that
will absolutely hire you on spec from one
request to get experience whether they give you an internship or pay you minimum wage
or even give you a salary. It is a wide open field. It’s about asking. – Yeah, I mean, I would
even complement what, everything Gary just said,
I’d complement that, Lucy by saying, you also have an
opportunity via these myriad social outlets and the
internet as a whole. Not just to reach out and contact people but to actually prove yourself. Like, if you need to show this experience that these people are seeking after, just do it. You don’t need someone’s
permission to do that. If you wanna work in
construction, build something. If you wanna work in
an automotive factory, work on cars. If you wanna be a filmmaker, make videos. You now have these multitude
of options in front of you to show that you’re capable. If you wanna be a writer, write something. – You know what happens
in that environment? If you actually have it, not everybody has it. But if you actually have it, you start getting into
a place very quickly that you realize, oh wait, I don’t need to have a job
in the first place. (laughs) – That’s right, no longer do you need the
runway to prove your worth on. You don’t need someone else’s approval, you just do it yourself. Scary and very hard to do, it’s not to be underestimated
just how challenging that is but it doesn’t mean that
the opportunity isn’t there and that opportunity wasn’t
there 10, 15 years ago. But it’s uniquely there now. – We’re byproducts of that game. – My entire career is
product of that game. – I had a liquor store
in New Jersey and got 300 dollar camera at Best Buy and decided to make wine videos because I wanted to be like Emeril. – Wine videos.

especially finding one that’s not sketchy. How do you find a
job that’s the right fit?” – The answer– Who asked the question, again? – [India] Neil. – Neil, it sounds like, by
the way you’re asking the question, I’m glad we’re
getting to attack this, that you’re looking at what is deemed as “Internet Marketing”, right?
When you say that all marketing jobs are scummy out of school,
I think what you’re falling into, is kind of those
e-book, kind of landing page, the bad version of all these
great growth hackers out there, the bad version of that, right?
Lowest common denominator, playing arbitrage, internet
marketing, buy my e-book in the back room, and the discs, MLM. It sounds like you’re going down a funnel, and what you deem as marketing
is scummy, and I understand a lot of that gets into dark
marketing but 98% of the marketing jobs in the world are
like working at VaynerMedia, this is marketing. So
first of all, I recommend recalibrating how you’re
positioning marketing, and make sure that you’re not
going down the rabbit hole of “Internet Marketing”, and
I keep quoting it like this– First, I love air quotes and
we all know that but second, there is that term for just
copywriting, make landing pages of red and yellow, and buy
this, and whether you’re selling supplements, or an e-book, or information, play that game out, that’s
not the world of marketing that I believe in or think about. So I would tell you that there
are eight billion agencies marketing, digital,
social agencies out there, and I would immediately
go get an internship, if you can’t get a job, and
prove that you’ve got the chops. It’s unbelievable how high of
a percentage of the interns that we get here at VaynerMedia we offer a job to. One, we’re growing fast, so that makes sense, but they’ve
come in and they’ve hustled and so the lack of
internship, out of college, if the market is bad, blows me away. It seems like the market
is getting better, jobs are being created more at this scale, than say, 24-36 months ago.
But the famous DRock story, or any other story like,
the ability for you to go and work for somebody pro
bono to get a résumé– Look, to me, if you’re
struggling to get a job for two, three, four, five
months out of school, why in the world you wouldn’t
take a half of your day, each day, to then work
somewhere for free, or intern, whatever it is, to a) pick
up skills, b) network, c) learn your craft in
action and watch it, d) create the leverage and
almost guilt your employer into hiring you, or making
them tell somebody else to hire you. You know,
better than sitting around and moping about why it’s not working out. Unless you’re out there,
literally, in job interviews or sending résumés, you’ve
got 18 hours in a day to execute this. To me, you
could be doing that from seven p.m. to two in the morning, and then from nine to seven, you could go do it. Go work at a pro bono place, or a museum, put your skills into action

some sort of card over here. I’d eliminate that from your game but I’m not razzing. Marketers do ruin everything and I’m a proud and happy marketer. So, don’t take that literally. I think you should pursue marketing and I love that you’re trying to, look the fact that you even know who I am and are asking a question
on the #AskGaryVee show, believe it not, makes me think
you’re gonna be successful. And, what I would recommend, is the degree’s nice and all, but I would highly recommend
if you’re still in university, to intern at the places that
you most think are innovating. I mean, when I think
about the last two classes of VaynerMedia interns and the fact how many of them get hired
into this organization and how great VaynerMedia is as an organization by comparison to the other people that are marketing as agencies out there and
I really believe that. I think they were very smart, strategic, and made the right move. I would give you the same recommendation. Get into the walls that
you most believe in and you should market in a different way and 99% of the places right now won’t allow you to do that so find the other five,
six, seven, 10 places that look like this place which will create the
culture to allow that.
