vineyard, seven acres. Now, I’m gonna ask you a question. If you had a seven acre
vineyard and it didn’t have these wonderful
views that we have here, how would you sell lots of wine? How would you do things different to all the other vineyards
that are out there? Cheers, I love you, boy, thank you. – Ah, it’s nice to see the wine stuff show up in the #AskGaryVee Show. I really appreciate the question. First off all, I’ve been to
Tasmania, an incredible place, making some of the most interesting sparkling and Pinot noir-based wines that I think are coming out of the world, yet so many Americans don’t
know it and it’s really sad. Think about how many of
you when you hear Tasmania thought about the Tasmanian
Devil cartoon character and that’s all you got,
which is really too bad considering how incredible the place is. Look, I think that we’ve addressed my– You know, it’s funny, we made a movie. DRock, you crushed it,
let’s link it right here ’cause I know you can do
that in the YouTube world. The Clouds and the Dirt, and
the answer to your question are really clouds and dirt,
or as, way is that I used to say it to my dad, big and small. The way I would sell a lot of
wine is we’d be big and small. Let me explain, you’ve got
a small kind of parcel, you’re not making that much wine, and so the small would be handselling. I’d be flying over to Australia, I would be going into the big
cities within New Zealand, I would probably pick one
or two markets in Asia, and I would literally fly in and hustle. Literally knock on doors,
walk around with sommeliers and salespeople from the companies
that represented my wine, and one by one, restaurant by restaurant, retailer by retailer, sell the product. Taste and sell, taste and sell. The unscalable, the small. Now on the big, and you’ve
heard me give this advice in the past, I would
become a media company. Now look, it’s very easy for me to say that that’s what I would do
because I actually did it. In 2006, while doing the small stuff, the tactical e-mail service, the website, building a wine shop, working the floor on a Saturday and selling. If you haven’t seen my comeback video, (snaps fingers) I know, a lot of editing, Staphon. Those are the small things, but the big things were Wine Library TV, right? I decided to make myself The Critic. I would if I were you for your winery become the authority of food and wine, food and wine, I wouldn’t
go lifestyle and travel, but I would be the
authority of food and wine for New Zealand food and wine,
the cuisine and the wines. I would actually review and
talk about your competitors. With a small parcel, you’re
not competing with anybody, really, ’cause there’s room
for everybody at that level. So I would literally turn yourself, and clearly you’re a very charismatic and good-looking man on
video, you just did it. You felt comfortable doing it. I would execute that at scale. Literally replicate what I
did by putting out content, whether video, which I think you should do based on what I saw, or written form. Become an authority, you
need to be a media company. You need to be bigger than you are brought to you by your wine, so
I would go big and small. But by the way, don’t get
caught up in the glam. While I was showing up on Conan and everybody was quoting me for TV shows and everything was great, I
was still downstairs hustling, trying to sell one more
bottle of Pinot noir. I was still in my office to 11 PM answering people on Twitter,
answering my e-mails tryin’ to get a good deal on a Barolo. I was still doing the small. It’s not playing in the
middle, it’s going big. You need to become the authority of New Zealand food and
wine, and the small, and you have to have the humility to get on a plane, sit in
the middle aisle and go to the Philippines, and
sell a couple of bottles to some random restaurant, got it? – [Voiceover] Scout asks,

what does hustle look like for you now versus five or even 10 years ago? Why has it changed? – This is such a great question. Thanks Harvest for it. And I’m gonna expand on it. I’m gonna long form on, I was even talking to DRock and Staphon that this might have to turn into a three to five minute video movie because I’m starting to
have this weird realization. I’ve been talking to Mike, Trainer Mike, about this during the workouts which is like, wait a minute. Was I really hustling at 25 to 30? I wasn’t into email culture yet nor was the wine industry nor was society. The store closed at nine. You know, after a while 7:30 felt like the appropriate time to leave. You know, I had girlfriends
that I lived with. Brandon, my best friend
who runs Wine Library lived above me. And like, you know, I can
sit here and think about, you know, 8:30 at night
on a Wednesday at 26 playing like Monopoly on GameCube and that is just not even remotely close in the equation at this point. You know, it’s really
fun to be a businessman instead of an athlete because your prime is so much further down the path and you have so much
more time to get there. Wait no, look athletes,
a lot of those people, those kids are, you know, hustling in Junior High and High School and so maybe the timing’s a
little bit different but, you know, the truth is my hustle today is at an all-time high
especially since June 7th when I’ve incorporated working out which has driven me to
wake up so much earlier. Not that I have more energy
’cause I was high on sugar, I’ve come to realize but, I can tell you this. Let’s start with this. Every person right here in this circle, this inner circle of five and anybody out there that really knows and some of you have watched and I’ve thrown up my
calendar here and there, nobody comes close to me and really sniffs my level of hustle and
how much work I put in and don’t take a step
back in saying, really? Because it is literally
every second of every minute of every day for a very
long period of time and you hear about it,
Alex heard about it. He was a fan. He knew what I was spitting
through this, right. He worked at VaynerMedia but until he got a little
closer, it gets really intense. It gets intense when I’m
working the way I’m working and I’m texting 17 times on a
Saturday while I’m in the air and saying do this, do
this and this, and this. I’m gonna do this and
this and this and this and this and this. And so, my hustle is up.

you know, I don’t know, teachers to me are actually,
my sister is a teacher, like they have the most
time to do other stuff. They have fairly good schedules. There’s the summer. There’s, you know, and
again, maybe you’ve got a different kind of teaching thing, but to me, if you want to build
more of a scalable brand, you gotta put out content. You gotta look at things like Skillshare where you can put out your teachings and sell that. There’s a lot of ways to do it. Technology has created
an enormous opportunity for you to scale it. You can do live Spreecasts
and Google Hangouts that only have access to people that pay. I would recommend putting
out a lot of content at first as a gateway
drug to the opportunity to charge people so you
can establish yourself. But this whole notion of where is the time, I need more time, I just think people are
loaded with excuses. They aren’t auditing themselves. They don’t realize that
they’re watching every season of Homeland and Game of Thrones. They don’t realize that
they’re having an hour and 15 minute lunch, like lunch. I’ve had two lunches. Robert Souza, our new SVP made me go to a lunch to meet somebody. I was pissed. I was like, why couldn’t
we do that as 11pm drinks? Lunch, like leaving and having lunch? The inefficiency of that time? So you know, I’m pissed at lunch and I’m pissed at Game of Thrones and I’m pissed at playing video games and I’m pissed at a lot of
things in a world where somebody wants more
financially or career-wise. I love it for the people
that need it to escape. I love it for people that are content with their monies and their career path. I love it. As a matter of fact, I envy it. Boy, if somebody could take a shot and suck out some of my ambition,
I’d be really pumped. You wanna do a start up? Create a suck out the ambition app. I’d be really happy about
that because I’d love to be able to take a lunch. I’d love to be able to relax
and play Madden against somebody in Iowa, because
that’s how you can play Madden these days, with the kids, for the last 10 years. But I haven’t been playing it because I’ve been hustling,
because that’s what I want. And so, whether you’re a hundred or zero, you just wanna zen and live in
a mountain with no technology or you wanna buy the Jets
and hustle your face off, or anything in between, you
need to find your cadence. And so if you’re asking this question, my intuition is you’re
spending an hour or two on things every day that aren’t achieving this extra brand or extra
monies that you’re chasing. So cut that crap out and
apply it to these things, putting out content, writing content, making videos, building up a brand, engaging with people,
going to Twitter search, Twitter.com/search searching teachings around, you know, key words around the things you teach. Engage with people, say hello, cold call, saw somebody shout that out in the YouTube comments yesterday. We talked about that, as a matter of fact, link up that video. People need to watch it.
That’s a classic. I don’t know where you want it, DRock. But you guys know which
video I’m talking about. The cold call. I had a
shaved head in there. Anyway, the bottom line is, you need to re-calibrate to your ambitions. By the way, it may be going
from seven hours of sleep to five hours of sleep

answering this question ’cause I was gonna go tactical, but then Steve reminded me
that I’ve answered this a bunch in the past, and I wanna
give that context too ’cause he’s right, and I
wouldn’t have answered it, so kudos to Steve for
making the show better. When selling a book, you
need to be selling it months and years in advance. I am actively, right now,
selling the #AskGaryVee book. Let me explain. I’m putting out content, and I’m jabbing, and I’m building an audience, and I’m building a lot of new fans. As a matter of fact, question of the day going right into it, How long have you been following my work? Please leave that in the comments. Podcast people, jump out of the earphones, and jump onto the
keyboard and go to YouTube and answer this question, because I want a lot of
people in the VaynerNation to see how many people are only
two, three, four, five, six weeks in because this
show is getting virality, bringing people in, and then
thus creating a scenario where, I was just thinking
about what’s the scenario, got excited, anyway, creating a scenario where
I’m bringing value up front, I’m not charging for this. I’m not asking for anything. I’m not trying to make a
gateway to a product, no. I’m just building leverage,
and then when I launch in early 2016 the #AskGaryVee book, which is probably gonna be
a hundred to two hundred of these questions that I’ve
done over the last year or two, if I can get that far. That was a little bit of
a gateway drug preview to how many episodes I’m expecting to do. And two, a bunch of new questions, and three is kind of a cool idea I have. (ding) A lot of people here
who’ve watched every show don’t really need to buy the book, right? I mean, you’ve consumed it, but at 18 bucks or 22 bucks, they will because I’ve guilted them into it because I’ve provided so much of value. And so number one, you need
to provide value up front before you ever sell your book. Let me get into some tactics. One-on-one marketing. One of the biggest mistakes
so many authors make is they send out a bulk e-mail, and it usually says this. “Hey guys, I never normally do this,” I mean, that’s my favorite. You like that, Zak? “I never normally do this, “but I have a book coming
out next Wednesday. “It would mean the world to me,” Why? They want to be efficient. People want to scale. What I did last August was I went to Connecticut with my family and I, one by one by one by one by one, wrote e-mails to people
that I wanted to help. Alex in 12 years. Alex, hey remember I really
gave you a break in your career. You know, we’re great buddies. Hey, nice job last week, da da da. I’d really appreciate
your help on this book. Can I count on you? And I basically went one by one by one and scaled the unscalable,
and what it created was a landfall of a lot of opportunity. The other thing is you have to
cess the market of exposure. That year, August last year, the podcasting was really
starting to happen, right? And so I wanted to really focus on that. So I went and I did a ton of interviews with all the emerging podcast people ’cause I knew that was the arbitrage, and what I mean by the arbitrage was a place where you would get
bigger return on your investment than other places based on its exposure. So whereas three years ago I’d
want to be in the Huff Post and guest blog post,
that played itself out because Forbes opened it up, and a lot of other people did that move, but the podcasting was starting to grow, and now there’s so many more podcasts, so much more competition for those earbuds that it’s changed a little bit. It’s not as valuable to be
a guest as it was a year ago because of the game, unless
a certain podcast overindexed and there’s more, and you keep playing this. So it’s really tactical stuff like that, but it’s really about
scaling the unscalable. The truth is, you’ve gotta get
to somebody’s emotion, right? So that it goes from heart
to brain to wallet, right? Heart to brain to wallet, oh I like that. That could be a really nice picture. Let’s, maybe a t-shirt. Heart, can you make a t-shirt? Anyway, heart to brain to wallet is kind of the way I
think about selling books. First you gotta get them emotional, then you gotta make them
think there’s a value prop, and you’ve got a storytell to them why they should buy your book. What’s in it for them above the fact that they feel that they owe you? And then that’s when they
start pulling out their wallet. And so I do that one by one by one by one, and when I do interviews,
one of the things if you go back and listen
to all of the podcasts, Lewis Howes, Peflen,
JLD, any of those people, when I was doing those interviews, I barely mentioned the book. As a matter of fact, when they asked me questions of the book
’cause they were good guys and they wanted to get me exposure, I’d walk away from it ’cause
the only thing I want to do in those 30 minutes was provide as much value for that
audience as possible ’cause that’s the first step, the heart. Thanks for watching episode

“when you were 25, how
did you overcome fear “of not doing as much or
not having it as hard?” – TJ, this is a great question. In life, there’s certain
things that you can control and other things that you can’t. One of the things that
really stand out to me is how much I, this is something I’ve rarely shared. I think I’ve shared it once or twice, Stunwin, keep me honest here. I’d be curious if you know. I think I’ve talked
about it once or twice. I often, when I was 18 years old, would call my mom while I was in college and cry, literally cry, like a baby, get that emotional about the fear that, at that point, I thought I was going into the family business, right? I was in a crap college. I was all in. I was going home every weekend working, and I had a huge fear
that I was never gonna get the credit I deserved as being, this is, ya know, the confidence inside, by going into my dad’s business because everybody would always
say that Sasha gave it to me, that my par–
look there’s even in Crush It!, there’s even negative
reviews on Amazon of like, “Oh yeah, but his dad gave him “a 3 million dollar liquor store.” Now, you know, as, I underestimated people’s knowledge that a three million
dollar revenue liquor store is not a three million dollar grant, and things of that nature, and then obviously my skills. I said recently in an episode, a lot of you caught it and tweeted it, “The truth is undefeated.” If I was gonna be a great businessman, I would get the credit that
I desperately, clearly wanted at that age and still at this point do ’cause the narrative does matter to me, not just the dollar results. And so, it’s interesting, this question really struck a chord because I remember not
only having that feeling, but I had a separate feeling which is the answer to your question. The answer to your
question is very simple. One, I knew that I would never have it as tough as my parents, so what I did was I had to execute against that privilege. Executing against your privilege is the only thing that you can do. I remember two things
that stand out for me. One, growing that family business. I wanted to pay back my
parents as quickly as possible. I, the greatest two
feelings I have in my body as an entrepreneur, answer this question. One, the fact that me and
my parents walk around and all feel like we’ve
given to each other. I paid back, right? I built such a big business
that it helped them as much as it helped
me getting that at bat. And number two, the day my
dad a couple of years ago maybe 18 months ago, said to me that I work harder than him, and that was a good feeling. That was something I wanted because that was another way
to pay back my privilege. The fact that my dad sacrificed
his entire life working to set up the foundation
where our family is going is something that I wanted to
pay back by doing the same. Now look, to pay that
back, I also want to have a better work life balance, to
spend more time with my kids, something he wasn’t able to do. So there’s other things
besides just working hard, but the fact of the matter
is the only thing you can do is to execute against your privilege. – [Voiceover] Joy asks,

when I get older, but I don’t know where to start. Like, what actions should I
be taking right now as a kid? Thanks. – B, listen to me. First and foremost, by
asking this question and knowing what The #AskGaryVee Show is, you’re putting yourself in a
position to be an entrepreneur. I like that. What I don’t like is the question because what you should know if you’re a purebred entrepreneur, so wanting to be an entrepreneur versus being an entrepreneur are
two very different things, and I have no interest
in giving the medicine to a 14-year-old, especially
’cause I gave the medicine to a 14-year-old Steeler’s fan yesterday, and it wasn’t pretty
and I’m not proud of it. On this show is probably the
second most competitive place I live in, and so what I
want to tell you is this. Look, if I were you, I would sell that Under Armour sweatshirt
that you’re wearing in the video to some other
kid in the neighborhood. I would go back in the woods
in the video that you just had and find some rocks and sell
’em to some nine-year-old girl. That’s what I did. I was that raw. Now, we’re not all the same. What I’m trying to tell you is the best way to become something
is to act like something. So, you wanna be an entrepreneur? Start acting like one, meaning start a business,
start selling things. Both will work, or find a mentor. Find the 18, 19, 20,
21-year-old kind of entrepreneur in your neighborhood and
start helping her or him out for free just to learn the
hustle, to taste the game. You’ve gotta put yourself in the position. There’s no reading about entrepreneurship. There was a question today that
came through for #AskGaryVee that said, “Gary, name the first, “name the four best business
books you’ve read this year.” And I laughed my ass off because I don’t think I’ve read
four books in my life, and definitely not four business books, and so there’s no reading, my man. There’s doing, and so sell

have affected your life “without Wine Library?” – Tiger, great question, and by the way, this is a big shout out episode 40 for everybody who’s asking for
a little bit more condensed, we’re keeping it tight on the four oh. I wish I said to the 21 year
old self to drink more 40s. That would have tied in the. Anyway, Tiger, you know what? I think about this a lot. And I’m gonna, I promised myself, and you guys have heard
me talk about this, to be honest on this show, and this is tough for me to say. There is a big part of me that
thinks I’d be more successful if I didn’t go into the family business. I wouldn’t have had the head start that many people can say
I had, and I respect that, but my intuition tells
me that I would have been even a little more hustler, right? Maybe, maybe to a bad degree. But I could see myself, my intuition, and I’ve thought about
this a lot by the way, is that I would have head out west during the internet boom, I probably would have had a company worth $800 million going public in 1999,
that would have went to $1 in stock value, but I
would have learned things in that that might’ve
made me bet even harder on Facebook and Twitter
and Uber than I did, and so, you know, my intuition, maybe cause I have ego,
maybe because I have bravado, is if my dad didn’t have
an amazing set up for me to go in to, if I didn’t
fall in love with the family business and
want to be a part of it, and don’t forget, I was
making a lot of money selling baseball cards. I could’ve went down that route. There’s just, I feel
like I would’ve really found my way, and I feel that my dad taught me honor and a
lot of conservativeness that has helped me not
veer off or have losses, but I think sucked out
a little bit of my speed and aggressiveness, and that
may sound weird to you guys, but I do believe that, and I do wonder if man, I might have been
more financially along. However, and let me put
this stake in the ground, it’s the best thing that
ever happened to me, because forget about the monies, those 10 years specifically
when I was full time of spending that many hours with my dad, when I’m on my last breath,
when I’m laying there and I’m dying, there’s
no question in my mind that those will be one of
the two or three things, obviously all the things I’ve
about to have with my kids, probably a selfish thing about how many Superbowls I won, but like, you know, those, that, those 10 years with my dad will definitely 100% be one
of the final five thoughts as I die, and to me that is an incredible accomplishment and
something I’m grateful for, and very thankful for. My friends, thank you for

obstacle to success, “a lack of time or a lack of capital?” – Roberto, this is a tremendous question. I think the biggest obstacle to success is a lack of optimism. That question in itself
is the problem, my friend. Right? You’re looking at two things
that are both negatives, and guess what? Both of ’em are obstacles. When I started winelibrary.com, transformation for my business, I had time, I worked my
face off every minute, but we didn’t have a whole lot
of money in our profit center so it took more time, right? It’s just the way it is. Today, I have more money,
but boy, don’t I have time. But neither, ever, ever, will be an excuse for me. And so, just to drill
this through the throat of the VaynerNation, that’s
right, I went that graphic, don’t smile DRock,
here’s the bottom line: I refuse to allow you to get
an answer to that question because both of them are firmly square in the excuse column, and I
have no patience for that. There will always be problems. Let’s talk about a million other things that are a way to stop success. The health and well-being
of your family members so it takes your mind away from execution. The country you live in’s government and political concepts in these moments, a la, startups in China that I’ve invested in that got traction, but then people that were
wired in to the government decided to not allow it to happen and then the start up disappeared. Not as easy to be an entrepreneur there, it’s still a communist country. Sorry, it just is. And so all these things
can be problems, right? There’s a competitor
with a billion dollars who’s also skilled and
punches you in the mouth and knocks you out in
the first round, right? The world changing. I mean, there’s just a
million obstacles, right? The media, one bad coverage of you. A moment in time. You know what I think about a lot? You know what I think about a lot? Let’s get really real here,
this is why we did this show. I always, I’m a human being, and I always think about a moment in time. What if I just say the wrong
thing at the wrong time? Right? What if I call out China for
being a communist country in an episode while I’m on a rant, and somebody who’s watching
doesn’t like the way that tastes and that takes away a business opportunity for me in China in seven years? Even though I’m not trying to zing, it’s just things that I saw. What if, you know, what if what if I look down on my phone while I’m driving even though
I’ve really not done that, and I hit somebody and I kill them? And that becomes the story, and then like forget about the story, about what you think about me, I will never recover from that because I killed somebody because
I needed to check a Tweet. These are moments in time. So there are so many things that can keep you from
being successful, right? The people that you invested in having something bad happen to them so it slows you down. My friends, there are a
million reasons why not, but there’s one great reason why, which is, you just gotta persevere, no matter what it is. It’s just the way it is. It’s hard being an entrepreneur. It’s hard building a business. Everybody thinks it’s so easy, that there’s an entitlement. There’s a disaster, zinging China? Here comes my U.S. zing right now: there is an insane generation
of 18 to 25 year olds that think they’re entitled
to having a business because they saw the
social networking movie and everybody’s decided
that if you’re a kid and you know what tech is. Because you used Instagram early on, you’re entitled to
actually build a business. Building a business is hard. And you know what makes it really hard? Everything that happens
every day of every moment. So, you can pick time, you can pick money as the one or two things
that you think stop you from winning your game, but the truth is, there’s a million reasons. 99% of businesses go out
of business for a reason. And that reason is, it’s hard. And so, if you’re watching this show, I’ve got a sense of who you are, and you need to start
creating layers and layers and layers of skin to
be able to get through. Because the glamour of
being an entrepreneur, the goodness, you know you get
very confused by my optimism. Because it’s my optimism, I can’t help it, it’s just how I roll. It’s probably one of
the variable 1% reasons why I’m successful. But please, don’t get it twisted. This is hard. Every day is hard. And if you don’t have the
stomach to weather the storm, you will not be successful. And by the way, let me throw you a real weird curveball, and that’s okay. People have to look
themselves in the mirror and understand if they’re
number two, three, four, five, six, seven in an organization, That has differences
of being a number one, but maybe that’s where
your skill set sits. Maybe that’s how you make
your fortunes and happiness and all the things that
you’re looking for, and so. That question got me
goin’ a little bit, Steve. Because it’s under the context of excuses. And I will never make an excuse. Everything that’s a problem with me, everything I don’t achieve, everything that’s a
problem at VaynerMedia, and everything is my fault. And I succumb to that, and I respect that. And I actually think that’s
the way it should be. And so, um, no excuses my friends.

gurus” that are spamming “everyone’s feed?” – Chase, I took this question because I need to razz you and everybody else who asks a question like this, but I want you to know that I love you and I apologize. This is a loser question. If you’re worried about everybody else, you’re not worried about yourself and that’s the bottom line. It is stunning how little
I know about anything else, except my world and you guys. Period, end of story. I don’t know how everybody
else’s podcast is doing, I don’t, I’m not listen
to anybody else’s podcast or video show or anything else. I’m aware, I know that
I’m between 60 and 80 on the podcast ratings, but I don’t look at
Tim Ferriss who’s higher or somebody else, I listen to it and try to figure it out. I focus on my stuff. Way too many people cry, “Oh, these social media
gurus are so loud.” Their loud but if they don’t have depth they’re going to weed themselves out and so if you spend one minute looking at what anybody else is doing versus spending all your time
about what is your audience care about and how are they
reacting to your stuff, you know what I spend my hour on? When I’m like winding down. Instead of looking at
who’s ratings are higher and then trying to copy their moves or complain that they’re putting out shows longer or better or different things or get guests or this and that. Instead of focusing on their context and their competitive advantages or what they’re doing well. What I do, is I read my comments. That’s what I do, because I really care about
what you guys are saying about this show. Where the value prop is, what your opinion on the website is, what your opinion about chugging is, what your opinion about banter is, because that’s how I’m collectively trying to make this show better. I’m focusing on the people
that give a crap about this and so, instead of worrying about what everybody else is doing, I don’t… It’s crazy and I think you
can see my energy on this. I know this is a huge, huge, you know, in lieu of the marathon coming
to New York this weekend, I am not a runner who looks around me. I’m like straight ahead. That analogy that people
use, that’s not my analogy. I have a lot of my own. Oh, by the way. We have the reverse engineer shirt, right, let’s link that up. That’s up. Did I blow it? You put it on TeePublic and it only has like 72

that they’re a fluffy, crappy guru and they don’t deserve it. Clearly, they’re hustling
and putting out stuff and clearly they’ll stay. Don’t forget, I’ve been around since 06 under this kind of monarchy and this is the interesting thing, there’s a lot of people
that were the social media technology gurus in 2007, eight and nine, that you’ve never heard of. They come and go if
