“how many do you have and
still stay productive “the next day?” – Phillip I don’t drink that much. Though it’s funny I actually
said this the other day in a conversation about my life which was I don’t think I
would’ve ever drank alcohol, just like a lot of people
reacted to the fact that on the show the other day, or somewhere. DailyVee or whatever
I said that you know I’ve never done any drugs, I’ve never even smoked a cigarette. I don’t think I would’ve
ever drank alcohol. I didn’t have my first
beer until I was 19. And I probably drank like 20 of them. Like I used to, talk about
milking a beer at a party. Like when you were 20. My shit was like not warm,
it was like a hot spring. Like I don’t really love alcohol. I learned to love wine. I weirdly started liking
really well made mixed drinks. Like the bartender culture
of New York helped that. So like bourbon, things of that nature. But I don’t love alcohol. What was the question? How many drink? You know what actually does get me drunk? The last few times I’ve been drunk. Sake. I love sushi so much. It’s in such little portions and usually when I have
sushi, for some weird reason it’s usually a Friday or Saturday night and I’m usually with Lizzie
or very close friends so I’m more relaxed and I go. And sake gets me twisted. But besides that I don’t know. By the way, right now
I’m on a hardcore diet. I don’t know if you guys have noticed but I’ve lost a good 5 pounds
in the last three weeks. Have you noticed a little bit India? – Yeah. – Thank you. And so yeah I really have
to say that nothing really gets me excited about drinking alcohol. It’s not really something
that’s part of my culture so I’ll drink a glass of wine or two when I’m not in this hardcore diet stuff. And it’s super easy to be productive because I grew up. From 22 to 30 I was
tasting 100 wines a day. My tolerance is stunningly
through the roof because of that. So yeah that’s it. – It’s probably also
stemmed from drinks meeting,

if the next 30 seconds

something you don’t know. I once, four and a half years ago explored and was willing to put up my own money for a Superbowl commercial
and in the commercial it was going to say, so I
guess this is I probably already answered this, four years ago, five years ago, before,
maybe six years ago. Six years ago, about six years ago, I tried to buy a Superbowl commercial for two million dollars,
my own personal money like pretty much my liquid at the time and I was going to make
a commercial that says hey America, it’s me
Gary and I really want to be your friend and I’m not kidding. I basically want to know you. I’m into wine, I’m into business, I need to know you, here’s my handle. It’s Twitter @GaryVee and
I’m going to be sitting right now answering all
of you, every one of you. So that’s what I would probably do. I would probably replicate, and by the way the end of the story was
I had the money for that but for all you media
buyers, you knew this I didn’t know it at the
time, if you try to buy at the Superbowl, Fox or CBS or NBC makes you buy another
20 million dollars worth of commercials around the
year to even get access to pay two million. That I didn’t have and so
Caleb and everybody else, what I would do is I would
just create a context point to let America know that I’m a listener for all the, you know it’s funny. I got a lot of feedback
by showing up on a bunch of podcasts the last
couple days and by asking, I’ve been asking a lot
how did you first feel about me when the truth is, I don’t make a good impression with
most people at first because I curse and because I have ego. What they don’t know is that I equally have humility. That I equally am not
a snake oil salesman. That I’m equally a tremendously good dude. So there’s a very ironic thing with me, I’m not as big as I could be followers, selling books, impact on the world because of the way I come out the gate. With that energy, with
that competition love, with that bravado and I know that, yet I don’t change because I think authenticity will always win. I’d rather, the amount of people that said they came around to me
in the comment section, I don’t know if you guys
read the Facebook on this or the Instagram like,
I first didn’t like you but then I kept hearing about you. I watched the second video, a third, now I watch The #AskGaryVee Show, I really go to know you. That’s why #AskGaryVee’s been big for me. You’ve gotten to know me
a lot better with this and DailyVee and so that’s
what I would do Caleb. I would just try to
establish that I’m a listener and I’d say hey, what do

“what are your tricks and
tips for overcoming jet lag?” – I don’t have a trick. I don’t know what’s happening. It’s called enormously lucky DNA. I think my brain can out
will a lot of things. I think when I get going, I don’t know, I’ve just got it like that. I’ve got a lot of natural energy. I showed up on some people’s podcasts over the last couple
days and a lot of people leave comments like this guy’s on drugs. So I’m super high energy. I get it, it’s so crazy, I’ve never even smoked a cigarette. You know like so it’s crazy how lucky I am with my natural adrenaline. What?
– It is crazy. It’s crazy just like being
around you, it’s real. Like that’s not just
when you’re on the show or like on DailyVee. – Right and it’s real and it’s long. It’s real, sustained, for 18 hours a day, every day, every month, every year. Yeah Mike was even saying
to me, I landed from I did the red eye, and I landed, and then we worked out yesterday and I had the best workout I’ve ever had like, my energy, he was just literally like how the fuck do you never crash? We’re super behind Matt.

to the world that I was a winner because
it was such a loser in school that I just worked every minute I didn’t you
know go to an extra keg party I didn’t you know like spend an extra go away in
a weekend and just do something different like I punted everything it
just went completely and utterly into I’m gonna build businesses this is who I
am and so you know maybe it would have gone on the ski trips so I can be good
skiing down into it like maybe like I would have done it with a rounded out
some stuff but the truth is in a weird way in the same way that I just talked
to you about the last question I don’t know like it’s also good I don’t i
probably like if I could speak to my high school self is that is not the way
it’s yeah I mean my high school so good news it’s gonna go it wasn’t a better I
like the den to I was antsy and I wanted to like everyone like I’m still there
but like that but I was super happy like I was like some outcasts like it by
teachers and my friends parents thought I was a loser but all my friends loved
me so let’s call it what it is when you’re fifteen you don’t give a shit
about teachers and parents you want your homies do think your cool so I was super
happy it was just trying to chip on my shoulder because unlike the all-time
great i really believe this i really believe it’s the same way that Harrison
Ford about his acting or LeBron about his basketball or or some music Whitney
Houston better singing like I did I really think young Whitney Houston a bit
greatest sitting there and saying she’s killing at a church she saying nobody
knows how great I’m really gonna be like I literally thought that I’d like I
can’t wait for them to all really know so there’s a little bit of like I can’t
wait to have my coming-out party I was I was antsy for the coming out party but
I’d probably say it like a man it’s all gonna work out great like like just do
everything you think you want to do just follow your instincts it’s gonna be good
high school reunions I know I haven’t got to talk to a lot of people on
Facebook in different places in my high school in like it’s interesting you know
I wasn’t outwardly like running through the halls and telling everybody that I
was going to be you know like I think the one thing that’s felt really nice is
like a lot of people have sent emails like it’s so nice to see you doing well
you were you were really nice and high school like that makes me feel nice
thing I think a lot of people are starting to realize on daily be that I’m
just a nice guy to be quite competitive and computational on a scary be on stage
like most people consumed from me on one likely to be a painting stuff ironically me and my competitive zone
when I’m not in business or on basketball court I’m actually kind of
completely the other way and I think that it was nice like that’s what I
don’t remember being like I forget the people are just mean in high school and
I was so self-confident that I never got dragged down to do that it’s good for

hate wasting time but how do you adjust
on days nothing is going right now there’s no such thing luckily I mean I don’t remember they
were nothing went right first and foremost the way I really deal with it
if you wanna get them about this and love you know this is as long as
everybody’s healthy everything went alright I always quantified one business
doesn’t go well i default quickly to our business is bullshit about life you know
my kids look how cute my kids I look at your life like I quickly switch from I
don’t do well you know I’m not good at Welling I loved speed and I don’t like
wasting time dwelling complaining wishing hoping you know pondering how
you wish it was is the single biggest waste the time in life and in business
like the bottom line is we all wish things I wish I was six-foot-four the single best looking guy in the world
and the quarterback of the New York Jets won 19 straight Super Bowls I wish that
I wish that I mean I just wish that I wish that the same way that that’s funny
is the same way to wish that like that deal went through or that employee took
the job or that person didn’t quit or that concept didn’t work out I mean I’ve
had multiple divisions multiple strategies here at one at the
intermediate that haven’t worked in the last 12 months get were dismantling it
and so much like anything else you just like the next it’s the next play using
artistic stuff like you’re doing a Broadway play when you mess up the line
and just stop and just cry on stage you just gotta go to the next line we just
can’t keep moving forward and so how do I handle it easily I’m champ on this
issue champion I am an absolute champion on
this issue meaning like I’m prepared for the punches in the face I expect things
not to go well I it’s kind of the way proper Jets game Saturday night nobody
likes being around because I’m just devastated all bad gonna have a real do you know like I I
subconsciously like that but I like the Jets were I say that I would leave these
guys can tell you I’m only on winning in office at all times like I wish I was a little bit more
patient because I was so hungry to prove

what changed the most I mean you know a
million things changed I started understanding the industry I like being
an operator that learns the industry by doing instead of readings for not
reading Ogilvy’s book you’re reading at age I learned and so I think my ability
to run the company increased tremendously that pounding team of six or seven three
people were all kids all the beaches friends they shorten their men now and
November 22 they’re getting close to thirty which isn’t saying much bigger
companies we have different dynamics everybody knew everybody intimately now
that happens in pockets with tremendous culture but like not every person knows
everybody not even close anymore so you got that dynamic run all sorts of cities
were big company we’re going up company it’s a very very very different yet the
energy is pretty much the same the mission of the same which has helped
clients whether they’re an NGO non profit or selling bottled water helped
themself up communicate at the best possible price in the best possible
channels to reach the biggest possible audience to create that business result
and more poorly that will treat each other tremendously well and have a real
real community here because continuity is what I’m going for continuity built
speed things that people are saying about business when you are useful ball a lot of any
use it sorry for people to follow but when your offensive line with all five
of those guys play the whole season together as they work as one it’s really
magic it’s really quite interesting when you really understand how football is
played it so it’s really a team sport more than anything when those five plane
the whole season together or two seasons together three seasons together and they
have that unity and continuity they follow the flow and that’s what I love
and businesses the reason I W my people so much am I
wanna make it so great for them as I want them to your not because I’m some
evil like Colt overlord it’s because continuity breeds speed and
I W speed more than anything and so we’re not as fast as we used to be
because we’re a little bit bigger but I’m proud of the speed and the scrapping
of the entrepreneurial spirit we have 600 that is still at least a solid

respect for business people if they go
off and rely on you wanna take pics etc do you feel respected or used I feel
flattered I mean I don’t I definitely don’t respond I don’t disrespect that
it’s the same way I reacted Brandon Marshall or you know when you’re into
something if you’re into you know the great blessing of my life another nice
thing that happened to me was I in the prime of my career when this
entrepreneurship became something people want to talk about right and so I mean
for the things that I was taught that I was a loser at from first grade to 12th
grade has now become the foundation of people wanting to take some things with
me the streets of New York I do not
disrespect somebody I don’t feel like that first of all if they’re saying how
I roll I already think I have an edge on all of you so there’s nothing to change
right if you ask me for something I don’t think like oh now I got you I
think I got you from the get I think I’m better than everybody and that we were
way when it comes to my business uniform on so I don’t think it changes my
relationship that somebody wants to do that I equally be located do that to a
Jets offensive lineman because that’s the thing I’m passionate and excited
about for me the feeling is very simple I’m flattered and humbled I actually
think the people that like me and are able to get through my facade of energy
and ego and bravado and actually value my content are quite smart and probably
have a little bit more each year and maybe that’s my own ego talking about
myself but the truth is that I look at it and so I’m actually intrigued by my
fan base you know a lot of people are always let you know a lot of you’re like
me you should more YouTube followers like more people should know Gary be all
the stuff that you guys are not so easy to figure out my friends we talk about
this is why post on internet like what was your first reaction to be because I
want you guys it’s not for me to feel great about myself I really got that
check that box that set for life it’s for you to see how other people reacted
to learn why this is all happening I’m a little bit of a contradiction I’m not
sure easy to figure out and so if somebody comes up to me as I like your
stuff the things that I default into the quick rush of emotion the blood rushes
to my head is like holy crap number two is like anybody else see this like that
India see this see how popular you know like number three is interesting that
they were able to figure out why you know those are the things that tend to
rush to my great good show good show right now it’s funny question of the day

“do you outsource, for
example, preparing your meals, “doing your laundry, etcetera
in order to enable you “to focus on work?” – I’ve outsourced
everything my whole life. Either I outsource it or I punt it. Since I was about in third grade if I didn’t think it was valuable to me to buy the New York Jets, I’ve outsourced or punted it. School, couldn’t outsource it, couldn’t say “Hey Brian Chen.” Real actual person, one of my best friends in middle school. “Hey Brian Chen, do my homework “and take my test.” Couldn’t do that so
instead I just took Fs. Just punted it. Sorry, I’m out. Outsourcing, when I went to college I was not capable of doing my own laundry because my mom did everything for me so I hacked, and I mean this is kind of
awkward, but I would get girlfriends to do it for me. I would I guess hook up with girls so they would do my laundry, because there was no other way for me to do my laundry, because to this day as I sit here in front of
you as a 40 year old man I’ve never done laundry in my life. Now I know you’re judging me, and I respect that, but I’m judging you, because I’m way better
at business than you are. Listen, it’s fair. I think that there’s I mean I outsource every, I don’t wanna do anything. I would never, ever, ever do anything that I didn’t wanna do if I could help it. I don’t wanna change
my tire on the highway. I have, because I was stuck, but if there was a new
Uber-like app called Tire where I could hit
it and in three minutes somebody would be there, I would do that every time. I don’t wanna do anything that I don’t wanna do, and I believe
everybody is the same way. I’ve worked very hard to try to put myself in the financial situation to do things, including fixing my weight and my health, because I needed somebody else to really be full time for me to get there, and then I’m just self-aware
about those things. I don’t want to, I don’t care how you judge me on
never doing my laundry. I get it and I don’t think that I’m right. I just think it’s my truth. – [Voiceover] Corey asked,
“I might be the best example “of someone who gets distracted
by width instead of depth.

and valuable work you know call it a great question and
honestly that’s a work in progress always to me is really a real-life
lesson in retail get his hand so so I think the ship the brain for retail this is something I’ve dealt with my
whole life like you know i i don’t think I’ve mastered it I don’t think that I am
doing busy work even now at the level let them that I’m still doing busy work
that i think is in hindsight not as good I think experience helps you I think
over time I’ve learned through oh crap I remember when I did that back in the day
don’t do that again you start understanding but I think one of the
biggest mistakes that entrepreneurs make especially as they grow their business
in the beginning with their crippled by the start of quality workforce is just
doing it you know like smart work versus just work he is when you start judging
it too much you start leaving yourself out of opportunity for serendipity and
upside the you can’t see there’s been a lot of things that on paper may look
like busy work going to get you know just kissing babies and shaking hands or
just replying to everybody on Twitter things that not everybody thinks is the
best skillful use of my time that has led to enormous upside because it wasn’t
obvious when you first it including a video shows including ten years ago in a
month sitting upstairs doing a video show
where everybody’s like we needed you that our to sell wine or to reorganize
our operations why are you putting a video on youtube twenties you to like
that it could end up being the biggest single biggest decision of my career up
to this point transitioning myself into a media
property in a brand from just being operated on this floor wasn’t obvious
that like it could have been busy work and there’s been other things that I’ve
done like that that have been busy work you know trying to think of a good
example but like a million things that we’ve stopped them started it didn’t
become real it happens with us every day in our team show so I think that I think
you don’t always know I think you find out after the fact that I think I have a
long forty to sixty year old old professional career that successful
as long as you’re learning in your 1379 12 patterns are becoming more self-aware
about yourself understanding your strengths and
weaknesses you start having less just busy work and more high-impact working
at the top of my career yes my question is if we wanted to start
a subscription box service should we buy

delegator or micromanager? “Can’t wait for the UK book tour!” – Both. I delegate everything that I think is not the single most important
things in the world. And then, I micromanage the things that I think are the most
important things in the world. Luckily for me, hence
why I’ve been able to build big companies. I don’t think most things matter. So, I don’t think I’m any
different than anybody else. I actually think that
everybody is a delegator and a micromanager. I just think my radar of
what’s important is different. Yes, we need to do something with that. That’s the shit guys. That’s it right there. I’m just like you. We’re all the same. We all delegate. We all micromanage. The difference is I don’t think most things matter. And, what do I mean by that, as I’m trying to think about somebody watching this for the first time, instead of alluding to people
that have watched forever. Most things don’t matter. That’s what it means. If I was like, I don’t know. I don’t think lighting matters
as much as DRock. I just don’t think things matter. I don’t think like one
client that’s going to put us out of business. I don’t think one employee’s
gonna kill our atmosphere. I don’t think a lot of things matter. I don’t think like a misspelling
in a deck is something that really matters to a
lot of people in my company. It just doesn’t matter to me. I just don’t think so. Guys. Guys, I don’t think we’re going
to lose the account, because we put the I before the E. And, if we do, (censored) them. Idiots. I don’t think not wearing
shoes in an establishment is the biggest thing in the world. Clearly, if you’ve watched DailyVee 1, some people do. And, guess what. I do not judge. Do not judge. Everybody’s allowed to do their thing. It’s just like parenting. I will never spew my parenting. I talk about it. But, it’s very holistic. Like, this is what I do, not what I’m telling you to do. This is me. But (censored) like. So ultimately, I think that I’m both. Like everybody in the world, I just think that I deem
what’s most important at a very very high level. You know what? A lot of you
are commenting about my five minute meetings. Most of you, because you’re
part of my community, think it’s great. A lot of comments on YouTube and Facebook. Like “Ooh, I like DailyVee because “Gary spends five.”, that’s nice. One comment. By the way, whoever said this is going to see this and be like “Holy
crap, he reads everything.” “I’ve worked at small companies where “the boss didn’t even know my name.” You know what I mean? Like this is cool. But, do you know how many people think it’s stupid? I have a lot of people
in my life that think that I’m very busy, and I
have a lot of things to do. And, why in the world? Gary it’s not scalable. It’s not sustainable. Yeah, you’re making that face, because you’re so in our cocoon. Just like, you know. Don’t do that. It’s not bad. Nobody expects you to do it. Not at this scale. And, you have a great culture. And, you have great intent. Just do that. I’m like “nope”. This thing matters to me. So micromanaging a hello into my company three to six months in, that a lot of people outsource to an HR person or to leadership. So, I do unscalable things all the time; micromanaging if I deem
them the most important. Pitching new business. I like to micromanage that. Because, it’s important to win business. Money helps me keep doing everything. Cool.
