a potential VaynerMedia employee can make during an interview with you? – Nothing. Because mainly I’m on feel. I’m actually not even paying attention to what anybody’s saying. I’m actually more trying
to get the vibe of it. So, you know obviously
then, that would mean lying, or trying to fake the funk. I don’t mind when people
come in and pander to my ego, I like it. I don’t mind when they don’t
know who the hell I am, I like it. See that’s what’s fun. When you want to rise
like a phoenix, it’s cool. And when you think highly
of yourself, it’s cool. I get to win, no matter what. It’s a great structured game. So, I’m not really analyzing for, there’s nothing anybody can do, literally nothing. You tell me that, eh, you
know, this company stinks. I’m just here for whatever. I kinda weirdly get into
teenage girl dynamics, I’m like, ooh, I’m gonna
turn this guy around. Right, so I’ll go that route.
Or you come in and say, this is the greatest thing
of all time, I’m like, yeah, that’s somebody that’s all bought in. I think I’m so goddamn optimistic, that it really doesn’t matter what you do, I’m probably gonna want
to hire you regardless. If you don’t get hired
by me, it means that there just wasn’t a
practical puzzle piece need. It wasn’t something you did. And that’s that. – [Voiceover] Mike asks,
“Do you or have you hired

“knowing you before they worked for you, “how did you establish your
authority as the boss?” – You know, funny thing about VaynerMedia, a lot of them didn’t know who I was. Kaylen. Please. – [Kaylen] Hi, oh God. – Let’s find out. Question is, you know, when most of my employees knew who I was prior to them working here, how did I establish my authority? Did you know who I was
prior to working here? – I knew you were in
the marketing industry, but I had not much context. – See, thanks Kaylen. – Yeah. – That’s the scoop, you’d be stunned. I appreciate everybody
thinking everybody knows me, I would say more than
half of the employees, if not 80, 70, 63% of the employees, did not know who I was. So, India? Staphon? – [Voiceover] Nope. – Thank you DRock. (laughter) So, there you go, right? Yo, you know, Eddie! Come here. You know, so, I’m gonna keep rolling here. One, whether they knew or they didn’t, there was just no breathing room. I’m the CEO of the company,
I’m gonna establish, Eddie, did you know who I was before you started working here? – I did. – Oh crap. – I did, I did know. – How? – My friend was reading Thank You Economy. – Got it. – And I just talked to Gary, and that’s when I found out about Vayner. And now I’m here. – Love you, brother. – Love you, man. – Great employee, too. Thank God for that book. So, you know, most of them didn’t. The ones that did, it wasn’t hard. They either had one of two things. They had no idea who I was,
easy to establish authority, I’m the damn CEO. They knew who I was, they
knew all my accolades, respect for the game, I’m the damn CEO. Easy. – [India] Easy.

“What is your biggest goal heading into “the homestretch of 2015?” – My biggest goal, professionally, is where I’m gonna go with
this, is to set up VaynerMedia for it’s biggest year, get
all my venture capital, and investing world in
order, a lot of transition, a lot of exciting stuff coming
that you’ll be hearing about, wrap up the book, very much focus on Resy and BRaVe and FaithBox, the businesses that I’m, and Grape Story, the businesses that I’m
deeper involved with, get deeper into the HR of 100 employees at VaynerMedia that I
haven’t gone as far with I wanna have that
personal connection with, dismantle the #AskGaryVee
Show through the winter and put out better and
better and better content, work closely with DRock to make a couple of killer, original videos,
work with you, Steve, to make WineDeals really
powerful, and I think we can, so those are some of the
things off the top of my head. Hopefully have my first really
exciting football season in five years, four years, I really am very optimistic, or maybe not, you’ll find out Friday on
my football preview show, and start the process, and most of all, number one, now put a
little personal in there, continue the workout regimen. I don’t know if you
noticed, but I’m starting to go into muscle gaining mode, and start the process of
hacking more time with the kids from a Monday through Friday standpoint than I have, whether
that’s walking to school, whether that’s coming home early. It’s not built into the infastructure this September, the way I wanted it to be, maybe because I got so much time in August that that didn’t populate,
but I’m definitely, in the same way that if
this show was going on the year before I started working out, I know it started right
when I started working out, you would’ve heard me talk a lot about working out, working out, working out. I’m a very smoke then
fire kind of individual, so I’m starting this smoke
on this kids hack thing, because the extremes are working, but I’m trying to find a little more time.

– [Voiceover] Sam asks,
“What is one of your favorite “questions asked by an
interviewee for a position “at VaynerMedia?” – I don’t like when Interviewees talk. What is my favorite question, by the way there’s a little bit of a truth in that statement. It’s something I’ve been
giving a lot of thought to is, I’m live. Oh, you got something? Oh, A.J. – Did you see the
Outside the Lines report? – No. Oh, AJ, bring some news here on the Ask Gary Vee. – I’m breaking a scoop. – I see you’re happy too, so it’s not the Jets are
in big trouble again. – No, it’s about Spygate. – Oh my God, what? – Three aspects that
came out of the report: one, a owner confidentially
told Outside the Lines that he thought deflategate was a make up call for Spygate. – Makes sense. – Owners are probably generally happy with how good Al handled it,
even though he lost. – Yep. – Outside the Lines is reporting can’t be completely based in fact that they think Spygate
was 40 games worth of tape at least. – Wow. – And, there was one other fact. Mike Marts, former coach of the Rams, – Yes. – on the record is saying
that he put out a statement saying he was satisfied
with the investigation, but that Goodell called
him and asked him to do it and Marts is now on the
record with Outside the Lines saying that he believes
Spygate was really bad, and that, – They lost the Superbowl because of it. – He didn’t say that. – I’m saying it. – But he’s saying Goodell asked
him to put out the statement and he didn’t believe it,
saying that he put out. Outside the Lines, huge
story, exploding right now. – I love it. We hate the Patriots around here. And that’s just a bottom line. Wow. – [Steve] That’s good, I got
a question about Deflategate. – You know what, is that right? That being said, I do
wanna say the following. I’m not upset about the Tom Brady ruling, a lot of you asked me, I’m
happy that he’s playing. I’m happy. Alright, I’m serious, by the way. I’d rather him play. We don’t play them in those sport games. – [Steve] Interviewee questions. – Oh, interviewee. Yeah, you know, the truth is, I don’t have a really
great answer for this. I like when interviewees
ask me honest questions. I think a lot of times,
they’re just mailing it in, they went to some website that says, ‘seven best question to
ask during an interview’ or they have an interview coach, or their dad told them to say something. I hate mailed in bullshit,
I like when they ask, or when they pander to me, like, ‘Gary, what’re you gonna
do when you buy the Jets.’ Like, I don’t need that
either, though I like it, I like being coddled, I don’t need it. We’re there to try to help
them help me help us help them as a team, and the truth
is what I’m looking for, so, you know, not that they
have to go the other way and ask a hard-hitting question, either. I don’t care if it’s,
if they truly wanna know what I’m gonna do when I buy the Jets, then I’m happy. If they truly wanna ask me, like, is the vulnerability of
this company your charisma and personal brand of
what happens without you, if they truly mean it and
they’re not just trying to win points on asking
the hard-hitting question, you know, I think that that
has always been my thing. I don’t want anybody going
too far in either direction of bullshit, just keep it in the lane of something that really matters to you, and so, sometimes I like the, you know, now it’s spurring some memories,
sometimes I like when they ask about, like, how much can they contribute to the 401k, or, do
you really, truly allow unlimited vacation time, like, like, I like when it’s just
actually coming from something they wanna know for themselves. I feel like I’m there to
provide value to them. I don’t think an interviewee
is trying to sell me on them to work for me, I think I’m trying to sell
them on working for me. And so, I really flip interviews
on their head that way, and that’s an interesting
thing altogether. Maybe I just love selling so much, maybe I’m trying from the day we meet, create an environment of safety, which I’m very proud of
that I think I create here. That’s the answer.

“if the price is right? “Or do you turn down based on your values “and beliefs?” – This has been interesting. We’ve been having some
interesting situations happening at VaynerMedia
where I would say that East coast and West coast
political correctness bias over certain clients has
been rearing it’s head at VaynerMedia, and I’ve
been really struggling actually quite a bit lately on what, I don’t want to
be the judge and jury of VaynerMedia’s moral
compass on which clients we take and so I’m trying
to figure out if it’s legal in America, should
that be the line in the sand? It’s a great question. We have, I’ve been, this is a really,
really tough question and a great question. We have passed on clients, because of my own personal compass, you know like the Patriots, and we haven’t passed on the Patriots. That’s unfair to them. Though I still hate you Patriots, but I love Vayner Nation Patriot fans. I just hate how you roll with football. The answer is it’s
starting to rear it’s head. America has never been more divided. We have growing offices in middle America which
I think will take away some of the East coast,
West coast mentality. Everybody in this office
is divided on things like, should we not take sugar water? There’s plenty of people in this company that think we shouldn’t. Guns, I mean Jesus especially with the tragic events of yesterday and this
entire year and just like the last several years in America. Alcohol. Tobacco, I mean what if the biggest tobacco company came along to work with Vayner. I think there’s plent of people here that would have a tough time working on it would bow out, wouldn’t
want me to take it on. Is that my, you know, I think I made those
decisions my whole life for me as a person. It’s easy for me. It’s me, I’m accountable to me. I don’t do the sponsored
stuff that I don’t want to. I don’t do any sponsored stuff, but I’ve, for example,
I’ve been thinking a lot about getting a lead
sponsor for the #AskGaryVee show in 2016, because I need and want those dollars to apply to a lot more advertising to
learn more about growth of content online. I need real dollars. I’ve been thinking a lot about that, that’s interesting. I’ve never thought about that before, and never did it with Wine
Library, things of that nature. Would I take any brand? Absolutely not. I think that money is the last thing that drives me, but I also absolutely have no interest in idealistic over political correctness
dictating my decisions, and I think we have that, especially when you
live in New York, L.A., San Francisco, and so I
have to think of things as collective including
a global collective not just the United States of America. That’s my answer.

fifty of your clothes will be less or

to this answer as long as you know I love being in a number 1 I’m so I don’t

we would crash and burn and not be anywhere close to successful as major

I could have won ABCDEF all the way through Z twice short because the two letters 26 p.m.

“that your staff was really young. “I didn’t see anybody
over 40 surrounding you. Why?” – Well, India is actually 44,
she just looks phenomenal. (laughter) I mean, so there’s that. You know, yeah, my staff is young, you know, I think I get
value out of mentoring, though I’m mentoring a lot of people now that are in their 30s and 40s and 50s. Yeah, my team happens to be young, I’m more than open to hiring anybody, race, credence, you know, like, anything, it just hasn’t happened. The company’s young. I mean, like, you know, look, it’s kinda one of these things like, stereotypes, there’s some truth to it? Look, I mean, this company started doing
social media marketing in 2009, ’10, ’11, like, the 60-year-olds weren’t rolling in. You know? And so I just think a lot of people
overthink these things, meaning, like, you know, for example, a lot of people around
me are always, like, wanting me to stage things, for photos, for
interviews, for on my team, you know, like, all this stuff, like, I’m aware that India’s
the female on my team. Like, I’m aware of stuff. I’m aware of everything. I just also think authenticity rules, and so I’ll be answering your question in the question that’s
the broader question. You know, I’m pumped to
have anybody on my team. Listen, and they will all attest to this, I love standing in front of the company and saying, look, I’m 39,
I’m the old man on the team and I’m better at social
media than all of you. Like, I truly believe that. I don’t pre-judge on age,
sex, where you’re from, well, actually, I do judge a little bit
on where you’re from, meaning if you’re from the
streets I do value you more. I do like a little bit of
the grind and the hustle. It’s an absolute truth. It’s so funny, the true
one place where I think more than the cliche things
of age or sex or race, where I’m a little prejudiced, is I value the streets. I just do. And the streets, AKA just struggling. I just, I’m a fan of it. Anyway yeah, just, it’s been
the serendipity of it. The team has been built from people, a little bit less, actually,
so that’s not true, like, India and Steve were here, and I guess the rest of the team, so four, were hired for us, so yeah, it’s an interesting
thought, like, I’m into it. I’m super into it. Apply.

“What are your goals for VaynerMedia? “Is there an end game?” – There is an end game. I want to build the greatest
marketing company of all time that is an evergreen business for me that I can deploy all my
future activities around. AKA, when I own the New
York Jets, VaynerMedia will be the marketing company
that re-designs the logo, that does the marketing
plan to take more of the New York market share from
the Giants back to the Jets. To sell tickets while
everybody’s living in a virtual reality world and feel
like they’re playing, and why would they go to a stadium? I think what will end up
being one of the great pillars of my business career, the
decision four years ago, really six years ago, but
really four years ago, to build an agency that
scales my skill set to build infrastructure around me to
then enhance all my future. Take one step backwards,
’cause that’s what VaynerMedia was, to build a client
service business that was taking away from all my other behavior. One step backwards, for two steps forward, DRock, you’re too slow.

“is that next book coming anytime soon?” – Oh that’s a good, oh I’m supposed – Oh the book announcement! – See, Sid, see this is what’s so
incredible about life. – This is good, this is good. – You love this, right? You need to right a Medium
post about this actually, and stop spilling coffee on yourself. – That’s the plan.
– Let’s talk about this. This is the first time in 124
episodes that I’m like no, let’s keep going. I think we’ve done some maybe there’s one other thing, something, but no, this is really
the first time I’m like flat out no, let’s just keep going. Definitely the first
time we’re going improv, and we are supposed to announce something very special, and now we’re going to. The new book is coming soon. Who asked that question? – [India] It was Kenneth. – Kenneth, thank you for saving the show. We have a new book coming, a lot of you know this, Kenneth didn’t. It’s coming out in March. It’s called #AskGaryVee, the book, and I’m trying to position it, I’m trying to create the
subtitle in a point of the modern MBA or the
holistic view of being a business, like business
2016 and be the way to, like I gotta come up
with the subtitle, but I wanna give it. I’m worried that it
being called #AskGaryVee makes it very narrow, and
you’re at the bookstore and you’ve never heard of me. You’re like I don’t know. I gotta give it a strong
subtitle of a 360, as a matter of fact, question of the day. What should the subtitle be
of the #AskGaryVee book? I like that, somebodys about to really get pumped. Here’s another way for you
to be a part of the book. It’s going to be 497 answers, and this was
the original subtitle. 497 answers on how to be great at remember it was super long. Zak made an incredible cover. I’m not gonna link it up yet, because I’m not sure it’s that, but and then it’s like and 80 never before answered questions which you and I and my ghost writer Steph Lan are gonna be attacking very shortly. I have a feeling some of
you want to be one of those never before asked questions and answers. We’re doing a competition. Oh, I get to make up the email address. Yes, so if you email right up here, bookquestions@vaynermedia.com, that’s right,
bookquestions@vaynermedia.com. This is what you will be emailing me. The question, and that may be a question that’s already used in the book, so India, world famous India may
be reaching out to you to get another question from you, because that ones not gonna make it, but more importantly, this
is the gameification. This is the kickstarter aspect of it. This is the salesman. This is the right hook part of it. You have to email blind auction. Blind, you have to email your name and how many books you’re willing to buy, because believe it or not, it’s actually already on Amazon. Do not buy it, by the way. I know a bunch of you are like Gary, I already went and bought it. I don’t want that yet,
because I wanna get the cover out there, get it really
right, and then do a huge push probably in November,
December, juice it up, let people discover it. Don’t get crazy. You can get a little
crazy if you want to, but don’t get there yet. How many books will you buy? Literally, let’s say DRock enters, Hey Gary Vee, you’re the best. By the way, you look so fit lately. You look great. I love the show. I haven’t missed any of them. You’re just super handsome and massively, massively, massively smart. You’re my favorite. Okay, here it is, I will buy 137 books. Here’s my question. The top 80 or 90, we have to decide. We’ll decide very shortly, and we’ll keep a database. Whatever we decide of 87 never before, the top 87 book amounts
will get into the book. You’ll be there, from
you, it’ll be really rad. You’ll be super happy. I’ll be happy because I
have a bunch of books. You’ll be happy ’cause
you’ll give up a bunch of books for next Easter,
something like that, or for your group, or your
clients, or your friends. That’s what it is, my friends. Join, send, we will
give you some time here, but we will be calibrating
those numbers immediately. See how that worked out. You keep asking questions. (instrumental hip hop music)

“an app and what would it be like? “why not have a jab jab jab app?” – Melissa, on this show I
talk a whole lot about betting on your strengths and not
focusing on your weaknesses. I as a product, leaders don’t
feel like very strong on it. I’ve got to much going on right now. I don’t want to stretch myself thin. Everytime I build products
they’re always half pregnant. If I ever build an app
or product it will be the singular thing I do or at least the one-a a la VaynerMedia. And so I’m not interested in building it. It doesn’t, like even the question… It’s crazy, India. Like even when I started
like answering the question it doesn’t feel good. Like I was clearly passionate
about the things I talked about in the first question. I’m clearly not passionate right now. You can even tell by my general
energy in answering this. I just have zero interest
in building an app. I’m aware that apps are good. That’s the word on the street. They do well.
You can build big businesses. I understand but I understand
myself better than my ambition to scratch that itch which
is actually quite low. It’s been higher in the past but I think I mature
along the way as well. And, you know, sorta
eating my own dog food and I just don’t, I
haven’t invested in it. The only reason this show exists is I invested in infrastructure. If I decide to hire two
full-time developers and really, really decide to
hire two full-time developers which I could do at any point. That’s not the problem. It’s me giving them, him and her, the energy to actually architect the map. Right now I just don’t feel
compelled to do that at all. And so, and so I’m actually gonna like… you can see I’ve brought the big comma in. This is where I want to
make it more valuable for a lot of you. Way to many of you and
obviously this weekend I got to see a lot of
engagement and really dug into some rabbit holes on you. Way to many of you are doing
one of two things incorrectly, in my opinion. One you’re letting the market
tell you what you should do. You should start an app,
you should be a guru, you should sell ebooks,
you should start a company. You should, you should, you
should, you should, right? Number two. You are actually convincing
yourself because you aspire to be something you’re not. I aspire to build the next
Instagram or Snapchat. That’d be really rad,
it’d be really great. It’s just not in me. So more self awareness, less pondering, less listening, listen to yourself. Except when yourself is bullshitting you then counter it with stop
bullshitting me, Gary. Alright, sorry. – [India] (mumbles)
