“Jewel, why do you think so many
people struggle to be happy?” – Because happiness
is a byproduct, not an actual destination. And so people have this
misconception that they’re gonna find happiness like it’s Europe and they’re never
gonna move out. (laughs) Happiness is a
byproduct of certain behaviors and can set yourself up to win and you can set
yourself up to be happy. The sad thing is happiness is a
learned skill and a lot of our houses don’t teach happiness. That was the situation
I was in and so I actually just started studying
people that were happy and I saw what
the algorithm was. What did they do that’s similar
and for me I don’t focus on happiness as much as harmony. I don’t really believe in the
word balance ’cause balance is a binary thing like oof,
it’s a great very tedious. Harmony is saying my
life has many components. I’m a woman,
I’m a mom, I am sexual,
I am spiritual. I’m a businessperson, all of
those limbs have to have tone and that brings about harmony. That brings about satisfaction. If only have one limb
that is very buff and the rest of us is atrophied, we have disharmony,
we have dissatisfaction but there’s no human school and so that’s what I’m
looking at starting. I want to be able to teach
people emotional and mindfulness skills so that they can
gain tone in every area. – From my standpoint, you know
since Jewel took it up here, I will take into one very narrow
place that I’ve been really try to spend a lot of time
on and that’s perspective. It’s so interesting to me why
I deem myself happy because I just am so grateful.
– Mhmmm. – Like the thing we got excited
about of you know the data behind being a human
being is 400 trillion to 1. When you just start there and
you realize forget about the odds of like beating
homelessness and like other or like being born in a communist
country like just actually becoming a human. I always make the joke that your mom could have had
another glass of wine. Or your dad could have
been late because of traffic. The odds are so insane. I’m just so grateful for what
I have versus what I don’t have and I think people just have all
these admirations and envy and all these hard-wiring things. To me, it’s perspective
just like there’s always, I just generally believe there’s
always somebody that has it worse and the problem is that’s
where I default into mentally and have practiced
to put myself there versus somebody’s got it better. – And the importance
with gratitude is, I do a gratitude
practice every night, and when you’re grateful,
you can’t be angry, you can’t be resentful. It literally just leaves
no room for anything else. – I’m just grateful. Alright, And.
– [Andy] Cool. Alan asks,–
– Alan.

I did some start up
business, some small stuff. I’ve been sitting in the same
job from last six years growing, seeking out mentors,
been doing my thing. I’ve been trying out the
eBay thing and I just got hit yesterday when I first couple
sales so I’m super stoked on that and thankful for that. Shit, dude, I’m
fucking stoked right now. (group laughter) No, you know what, man? Before I ask the question,
I just want to say thank you for everything you do, man. I frickin’, I throw your name
out there anytime somebody stops five second to
listen to me say it. Everything that you
offer is frickin’ huge, man. My brothers, friends, coworkers,
I’m like Gary Vaynerchuk. They’re like Gary, Gary who? I’m like look him up right now,
follow everything he does. – Thank you, man. – [Jesse] So anyways,
I’m doing all the stuff. I’m everywhere right now
and I’m trying to figure out what is the next step. I’m mean I’m trying freaking
anything and I’m not in it, you know, I want to make money. I want you want
to be successful. – Of course. – [Jesse] There’s
no doubt about that. – But you want to be happy.
– [Jesse] Exactly. – You don’t want to buy–
– [Jesse] Not chasing money. – Not everybody wants
to buy the Jets. Right? And by the way,
by the way actually this, man this is the call-in
show is gonna be great. If I, if I want, if I didn’t love what I do
all 19 hours a day, then I wouldn’t be talking
shit about buying the Jets. I got lucky that the thing that I love most is
building big businesses. – [Jesse] Right. – If I loved, you know, being an
architect more than anything in life and that’s
what I gravitated to. Legos and
drawing when I was six, seven, nine, 12, 13 instead
of selling lemonade and selling flowers and selling
baseball cards then I would just be talking about coming
the greatest architect of all time and that wouldn’t
have maybe trillions. That would have made me
successful and rich and I get it or very honestly if I was wired,
by the way and this is why you like me so much, if I didn’t
have the DNA of a salesman and entrepreneur, I would
be a guidance counselor. – [Jesse] Right. – I love, I live for, bro, do
you know how much money I leave on the table by giving you this, by doing what
I’m doing right now? I’m leaving a lot. And by the way, it’s not
because I’m such a great guy. It’s because hearing you say
that in the beginning of this call is a greater high for me than any deal I’ve
ever closed in business. And that’s not
even close by the way. Having another human being
tell you that you’re having a positive impact on their life. I promise you this, you’re not
coming to my funeral because I made $1.7 trillion
in my career. You’re coming to my funeral
because I might have made you $1,700 more and tweaked you in
a place where you had 49 more years of happiness.
– [Jesse] Right. – Dude, honestly this is very
simple to answer your question. That’s why I went on
the little bit of a rant. What do you like
when you’re not working? Build a business around that. – [Jesse] Right.
– Like what you like? I gotta tell you right now
this whole VaynerSports thing, I’m getting scared. I might shut it all down.
I’m in love with it. Havin’ these football
players sit at VaynerMedia. Jon Toth yesterday,
offensive lineman, center for Kentucky going to be, he’s going to be on
the Packers in six months. It’s the weirdest thing. Alvin Kamara is gonna rush
for 137 yards on a Sunday and I’m gonna be like, “Wait a
minute, that’s my dude.” It’s crazy and I love it
and watching AJ’s happiness. He’s not gonna make anywhere
close to as much as he did at VaynerMedia but watching
the happiness in his heart, what do you like? Surfing?
What do you like? T-shirts?
What do you like? Hip hop?
What do you like? – [Jesse] I think
that I like, to be honest, for a while it’s like an
extreme sports thing but now what is is building people. That’s what I like. I like seeing other
people be successful. – And I think you know this,
I’m very scared of the life coach business because I think people are
ripping people off. So as long as you
feel good about it. Here’s an idea, what
about starting a club? What about, what about… Dude, there’s so
much shit you can do. Let me throw you rogue ass shit. Why don’t you get a job at night
at a restaurant where you tell the owner that you want to work
as a bartender because you want to start a club in his
restaurant or her restaurant every Wednesday night for
aspiring entrepreneurs or for people that want
to live better lives. So the exchange is I, who am
way over qualified for this job, am going to work here three
nights a week and I’m going to meet people that come here and I’m gonna start a
club in your restaurant. And then what you’re going to do
is once you test out what a club and group together at
a restaurant looks like, you may then go get investors
or buy your own or save money or sell everything on
eBay and get your own. Do shit is the answer. Do you understand?
– [Jesse] Right. Totally, and on that the
craziest shit about what you just said is
that today at 11:30, I actually orchestrated three
weeks ago starting a club at my business, the company that
I work at and the first day of the club starts today. We’re going into leadership
and I’m going to help do my best help and learn from other
people in the company who want to be bigger, who want to be better,
who want to do more and not just to work. – Can I ask you a question?
– [Jesse] Absolutely. – Off of that,
what just happened, When do you think the world’s
gonna realize that I’m actually a genie from a different planet? That stuff freaks me
out when, it’s so cool. Anyway, listen, my man,
keep focusing on this. I like vibe of your voice. That’s one of
the reasons, I kinda, I’m very big on tone and energy. That’s why the call-in show is
going to be better because when I read it,
I don’t have the tone. I can tell the goodness
coming out of your mouth. I can feel it.
Let me tell you this. It sounds like
you’re fairly young, how old are you? 29?
– [Jesse] 26. – Good.
Patience, brother. Keep doing good, keep bringing
people value and don’t think about what’s in it for you. What’s in it for you will happen
when you are purely pushing to bring people value.
Shit just happens. – [Jesse] Hell yeah.
– And you got time, brother. You’ve got five years, do me
a favor don’t try to charge a $1,000 a head or
$500 a month, do this. Just keep bringing value and
I’m telling you for five years online and offline, random,
just keep bringing value. It will also work itself out,
you’ve got a lot of time to cash in on doing that could move. – [Jesse] That’s what
I’m going to do. – Alright brother, take care. – [Jesse] You too, bye.
– Bye.

– Hey Gary. What’s up? It’s Jessica Louise Li here. I was at the Archangel event here in Toronto. I stood up to ask you a question– – Which I crushed. – but we didn’t get it after Gio and Nick whisked you off the stage but it’s all good. I would love to know […]

– Hey Gary.
What’s up? It’s Jessica Louise Li here. I was at the Archangel
event here in Toronto. I stood up to ask
you a question– – Which I crushed. – but we didn’t get it after
Gio and Nick whisked you off the stage but it’s all good. I would love to know how you
would describe joy and what brings you joy? What brings Gary joy? Thank you so much for providing
all the value that you do on stage it was amazing. Thanks for the book, I’ve been
enjoying it every single day, starting off my day that way so
thank you, thank you, thank you. – Jess, you know what? I’ve decided I’m
going to share something. For a lot of you that watch for
a long time, this is going to be a cool moment, I think
if you think it’s cool. Truth is I talk a lot about
the strategy of 51/49, giving a little bit more
for the leverage of it. The truth is it’s my
most natural joyous state. You know, I’ve molded it and
that’s not fair because I’m not manipulating or molding it,
I’m trying to be cynical here. I’ve experienced
the benefits of it from a business standpoint but I didn’t think that way
when I was eight years old, when I was 10 years old and on
my 10th birthday when my grandma took me to Toys “R” Us,
I decided to buy my sister a Cabbage Patch doll because
I knew she would be more excited about me doing that than me
buying anything at Toys “R” Us. I have always been this person. I like making people feel good
’cause it makes me feel good. I’m being selfish by providing others value ’cause it brings
me my biggest joy. And the reason I never talked
about it is what I just said is so douchy, it’s like,
you know what it is? It’s like when you interview
somebody and you’re like, “What’s your weakness?” And they’re like,
“Oh, I work too hard.” It’s like such a douchy
answer it’s a non-answer. It’s a compliment. Saying your greatest joy is
giving to others and the way that makes you feel is
a douchy thing to say. So here I am, I’ve been deep in
the GaryVee world since 2009. Please? – [Eliot] Not nearly
’cause it’s win-win. – It is a win-win but it’s like
the reason I’ve never really gone there and I don’t even know
why this question made me feel like I now went there,
yeah, of course it’s a win-win. – Yeah. – But I’m always
conscious of everybody watching. So for example, this weekend I don’t know if any
of you guys saw. Go on my Facebook
feed if you didn’t, if you’re watching on YouTube. I posted a video of me garage
sale-ing this Saturday and I showed some stuff and
it was a really fun day. – [Eliot] You should
do more of that. – I will and we already
talked about it this Saturday. Get ready for it. But I, I don’t show my kids so I wasn’t really able
to film all of it. There were people who
thought I staged it. Did you see this? There were people who
said, “Oh yeah, right. “You can’t
bullshit a bullshitter.” I’m like this fucking, if you
can’t bullshit this bullshitter I’m gonna fuckin’, the
cynicism is so wild. So wild, like do you really
think, I, with everything I’ve going on in my life and the
leverage and all the good stuff that my new plan, my new plan
was you know what this Saturday I’m gonna trick people. I’m gonna go to some store
and buy things make, what is the
matter with people? Then, somebody else was like,
“What is this all leading to? “A $10,000 how to
money on eBay course?” I’m like, “Yeah, dick face a “$10,000 how to make
money on eBay course.” No, fuck face, it’s for me to
spend some time with my kids and show people that this is the
world I came from as a kid. It’s still tangible. There’s a shitload of you that
could actually really benefit from $300 more a week in money,
learn something, including the thrill of the hunt and how to
educate yourself to know the value of things. How to do copy and salesmanship
in an eBay environment which is the most ultimate competitive
environment and how to hustle because while all of who were
sleeping Saturday morning, I was out going
through fucking trash. That’s what I was doing. So anyway, where was I going? To come out and say my great
joy is to give other people joy ’cause it makes me feel so
fucking good is gonna be met with such obnoxious amount of
cynicism that I don’t even want to waste the time on it but it’s
the answer to that question. That’s the truth and by the way, I got this is where
luck comes in. I know a lot of
you say I hate luck. Let me tell you what luck is. Luck is that you were built in a
way where that is genuinely the way you feel because then you
actually do it ’cause you love it and then enormously
awesome shit happens to you. So how do you
think I work so hard? ‘Cause I’m filled with gratitude
that I was built that way. ‘Cause that gift, that fucking
gift is the fucking thing. – [Eliot] I’m loving this. Next question is
from Ryan Blair.

My name is Bo Muchoki. I’m a real estate agent and
a motivational blogger and I have a question for you
about self-awareness. You’ve spoken a lot
about this topic and how to gain self-awareness. You’ve also touched on how
meditation is a trend that’s really gonna take over and be
in every household in the near future so what are your thoughts on how to gain self-awareness
through meditation. I, myself, gained a lot of
self-awareness and clarity on who I am and what my actual
goals are through meditation so what are your thoughts on how meditation can help you
gain self-awareness? Thanks. – Bo, thanks for the question. I think the answer is,
I believe. I believe I believe you. There’d be no reason for you
to make this video and lie. I believe that there’s a lot of
people that are gonna gain it. I’m a very, very, very strong
advocate for way more discovery by the human race around
understanding the brain and mental health, mental fitness,
mental, mental, mental. I promise you that when it’s all
said and done for me people will realize that that was
the game that I won. That that’s the
gift that I was given. That that was where
I had all-time skills. It’s just we’ve grown up
in a world and I, for the last 40 years, where
that wasn’t the conversation. People can tell if you’re
pretty or good at athletics. Nobody rolled up
on me and were like, “Yo, bro your brain
is on point.” Right? I’d say that because when I say
brain I mean the mental pillars of emotional intelligence that
are the foundation of everything I’ve been talking
of last four years. You could tell me
I’m good at school. Memorizing something
and regurgitating. That’s not what
we’re talking about. It’s having that centering,
having that place, that energy that allows you navigate
through all adversity. Not getting too
high in your highs and not getting too
low in your low. It’s balance. It’s the contradictions
that make me me. I want awesomeness for everybody
but I want to punch all of you in the face too because if
you want to compete with me, you’re gonna lose and
it’s all that stuff. Sorry, India. And that’s all that stuff and
so it’s all of that foundational stuff that we need
a lot more for and if meditation through a process is what unlocks
people to be happier, to be more grateful, to deploy more empathy
to do all the tried and true cliché things that would make
the world awesome, awesome then we would be in a
really, really good spot. And I don’t believe that there’s
Nirvana and it’s gonna be perfect but moving anything
just a little bit really works. We’ve had world wars. We’ve had in epidemics. We’ve had enormous atrocities. We continue to do
them in the world today. There’s genocide and people are confused and
so yeah I’m I’m all ’bouty, ’bouty, I don’t even
know why I said that but I was thinking about
Master P the other day. I’m all about, all about
people understanding that mental health, meditation all these
things have a lot of upside and that we do not understand anything about
the brain currently. Just an enormous, vast
opportunity for us over the next century to learn more about this
and I’m excited and grateful that my great, great, great,
great-grandchildren will live in a world where that will be understood far more
in a substantial way. In the way that people died
from disease that we so easily navigate through today,
all these unhappy people, and all these tragedies, and all these negatives
that are completely, completely coming from the fact
that the mental status of that person isn’t in the best place
it could be are gonna be an amazing challenge for our race, for our world, for who
we are as humans. And I’m really into it and
I really bank that that is where so much of my
happiness comes from. I’m actually quite sad that I’m
not to be able to see it where it’s gonna be 100 years from
today unless somebody figures out technology and I’m into it. I’d be pumped to be a buck 40. I will Yoda this
fuckin’ world up. And so that’s that. – [India] “I will Yoda
this shit up” as a t-shirt.

– [Voiceover] Nice Tat Co. asks, “What’s your ‘major key’?” – What’s my major key? – I got the reference.
– Yes, yes. (laughter) I think my major key is,
you know, only doing the things that make you happy. I think you can only, I think when you’re happy,
you’re creative. When you’re
creative you produce. When you produce
you see results. When you see results
you do it over again. Most people think they’re not
creative or they don’t have the ability to create,
that is not true. I think everybody has the
ability to be great and they just may not know it yet. But I think that when they are
in position when they’re happy, like authentically happy, they
can build things that he never thought they could so I
think that’s would be my key. – My major key you brought up
earlier which is why a lot of my team smiled. I think self-awareness
is the key. – Self-awareness. – Because I think it similar to,
you know it’s funny, you also said something that I push
against a little bit which is being great is an
interesting definition. Depends on how one defines it. I believe that anybody can be
the best version of themselves if they can find the thing that
they were naturally meant to do that’s the best in them.
Right? And I do think that, I
think self-awareness is just– – And that comes from getting to
know yourself and spending time to understand yourself. You know, it allows you to be more convicted about
certain things. – It’s funny, for me I never,
I’m almost feel like I’m meditating in
parallel with my speed. – Okay.
– I’ve never– – I like that actually. – I feel like I’m
doing it in parallel. – I love that.
– You like that? – I think I do it too
and I never realized it. – Yeah. What I haven’t done and I’d like
to do is a 26 day trip to think about it but, to me,
I do it in parallel. – Yes. – I’m in motion and
reflective at all times. – Yes, yes, I love that. Is there a term, have you
come up with a term for that? – I think it’s Vaynerism.
– Parallel meditating? – I don’t know.
There probably is. I’m so under, I’m such an F
student people are just laughing right now. They’re like no
you mean “bajuga”? Yeah, of course. – I actually like that.
– That’s what I do. That is literally what I do. I’m basically auditing in
real time, it’s a matrix as I’m moving fast as shit. – But you’re always meditating
for the rest of my life. – For the rest of my life
that’s why I’m so happy. – Yes, that’s why you
evolve so fast. That’s why, I’m
pulling opposite directions. – But everything (inaudible)
everything, ah, I love it. I love it. (laughter)
I love it.

was using their hostel has a lot of
variables and a lot of variables in this episode of context which matches the
answers you might have you might not be passion about your more starting war
going through something let me actually bring some shattering news here for the
first time in my life I’ve been thinking about things like sabbaticals and
building a business school in Haiti for five years and like like I love listen
I’m still all about buying the New York Jets and in the process of that and the
game but it’s amazing for me to be in tune with myself the maturity you like as you get older
like just a fluke but kids are six and three and are interesting like it into
their interesting when you start putting you know you’re projecting what do they
look like at 13:15 like a really cool to like I don’t
believe in the school system as much as everybody liked or just take them and go
to some rogue like just different things like you just a ball and and you might
have just lost your Northstar thing that you thought you were going for might not
be it’s why I was always happy to live in 1,000,000 bucks when one theme are
private plane or these little things like it was fun to be like I wanna by
the Jets and what that always meant to be as I want the process of buying the
jets which means I get the hustle forever cuz that’s my that’s why I am
maybe you’ve lost who you are or what you want to be accomplished kind of
formula too cheap herbal I would be crushed if I thought what I wanted to
achieve was super achievable anything happening in the one was happening of
Boehner bay’-nur is becoming a player in the agency world we’re not like now when
I go like like like like like that’s not as fun for me I like being the underdog
I like the climb you know I like that so maybe that’s
happened maybe just tired I mean I think one of the things that the New York Jets
24 me that nobody understands those hours actually thought that was the
first time I talk business owner just came in 15 years and looked at my phone
the wrong kind is a very big thing and only the second on it like I am escaped
and I got so excited like those 34 hours escapism maybe needs a vacation time I
mean we need to look at the people around you maybe need to change we need
to break up with her boyfriend or girlfriend like there’s like there’s a
lot of intense stupid things that could be happening or maybe you can take a
step back and really listen to this statement which is you’ve watched her
hustle because you really are not in tune to why you’re doing it right you
just not intend to what you’re doing it that that your maturing and realizing
like a Ferrari or a fat watch or courtside tickets or custom night i just
want to show them you know is not what you’re living for and so funny tonight
I’m going to the Charity Water gala I never thought of myself 10 years ago
somebody who’d be so involved in non-profit sitting on the board opposes
a promise donating I was you know I was also going
forty older like this much better people that’s what I think you are thank you
much better generation i grew up thinking I’ll get rich and when I’m old
I’ll be like giving out money into that stuff so you just evolved right and so
maybe maybe you like me like I don’t have enough money like my kids can give
away all the money but I can I don’t have that luxury yet but maybe you want
to do not profit if you want to build schools proposes a promise I will take
you allow us like maybe you’ve lost your purpose so take a good step back shutdown shutdown for 24 48 72 hours go
away go away like this this is how to shut down to Airbnb this is 2016 way to
shut down here being be fine of Mary remote place you know touch but the
young just wrapping up the show go to go to hear me be very remote place that you
get to a low cost like a crappy cabin far away on a four hour drive rekindling
just drives you can drive you there are like it I gotta lowest-cost farthest
away seclusion and just be with yourself and
start talking yourself a real really talk to yourself a real one of
the things I do with myself as I talk to myself a real in a weekly nobody is a
harsh critic and bigger fan of themselves than me and I think that
friction in both directions matters was interesting and never said
that before I never said that because he

“for someone who finds out
that they’re not cut out “to be an entrepreneur?” – Oh yeah, I get it
Malik ’cause you played, I’m just kidding. Being an entrepreneur
is not some great thing. It’s just as good as being anything. It’s just as good as being
a great, I mean listen as much as it’s amazing for
me that I inspire people to maybe build businesses
that then is a gateway drug to happiness in their
life, I’d be, I’d feel really compelled to be financially secure, have better work, life
balance and be a brain surgeon and save people’s lives on a daily basis. Like there’s a lot of things,
or like some of the things, do you know, you know maybe
not as financially rewarding but if you’re wired to be
a great guidance counselor. Impacting teenagers through
those really difficult, and being a guidance
counselor in a high school for real and if you’re not
mailing it in and full of shit and only wanna be there nine
to three and you’re out, if you really are in it. It just comes down,
you know it’s funny, so that would be cool to
be a guidance counselor which leads me to the point
that made me think of this which is if you’re really passionate. And I don’t use that
word as you guys know. I kinda stay away from that
’cause I think it’s kind of a bullshitty word, but if you’re
truly passionate and really into what you do and you
really give it your all. Like if you really do, whether
you do it for yourself or within an organization
that you believe in or within an organization
that you think will get you to the place you want to be one day. Which is really what I try to build here. Which is one of those two things right? It’s a place you want to be,
around me and that energy and that success and that
machine for the rest of your life or you feel like the
things you learn at Vayner over a two, six, 12, 19
year career lends itself to the things you want
to do in the future. If you’re lucky enough to be
in one of those scenarios, regardless of what you do, if you passionately get up in the morning. If you got up this morning
at six a.m. like I did and were fired up to go, of
course ’cause the Jets won, but fired up to go and your
to go was you’re gonna go in the office and from nine to
four you’re gonna clean teeth and work on cavities ’cause
you’re a badass, motherf- dentist that loves the teeth
game well then you’ve won. My advice is if you figured out
you weren’t an entrepreneur, well then you’re just like
one of those contestants on American Idol. That went there, you gave
an at-bat, good for you, kudos. You stood in front of Simon
and he said you f- stink and you’re like crap and then
you went home and it aired a couple months later and
everybody laughed at you and on Twitter they said you
stunk and you’re like alright maybe I’m you know weird
and maybe I can’t sing. Now what you need to do
is comma, move on and try to figure out what you can
do, what you are good at and more importantly what do you love? And then there’s the other big
semicolon, I don’t even know that’s definitely not the
proper grammar, but like there’s the other parallel thing. Which is you don’t give a
crap that you suck at singing. You can’t breathe and believe
that you can do anything else. You’re just gonna sing. Awesome, go get a job at a karaoke bar. Go, work at a music store
and just sit there all day and sing. There’s absolutely this remarkable balance of what makes you happy, what
makes you the most money. Some people are just blessed,
lucky or grind their way into it or were born with
the talent of like being able to do both. I would tell you that if
I could make enough money to make me happy because I
want it, because I like it. I like the game, it’s the
game of it more so than it but go, I’ve often thought
about fully retiring and just garage saleing. You know? But the problem is I just have
too much other ambition and other things I want to do and
it’s really not predicated on the money but like the
garage, I’m very close, I’m one DNA strand away from being a guy that makes $87,000 a year
garage saleing every day. And that’s cool and I have
so many friends and relatives that are rip crap happy that
tried to be entrepreneurs, failed just like I would fail to be a professional
hockey player or a singer, and have gone on to
massively happy, it’s just about being happy and so my
advice for an entrepreneur would be dust it off, be
like alright that’s not me, even though it’s a hot
thing to be right now, and let me go figure out
what I can do that is. To me the magic is what’s the
thing that you can do the best that you like the most? What’s that cross section? And then that’s a great place to be right? It may not be perfect,
you might not be like Kobe who loves playing, you
can see it in his face, loves playing basketball more
than breathing and happened to be phenomenal at it which
is why you become Kobe. There’s a reason there’s Kobe. There’s a reason there’s Madonna. There’s a reason that there
are these one-named people. Cher, you know, there’s a reason, let’s cut to the chase. Because they happen to have
at the inflection point, the passion and love and
desire and the talent for that thing and found that thing. Which is a whole nother category of things to be successful. I feel like I’ve had
that but I also recognize in so many not that exact thing or the upper-middle class version of it. The eight on a 10 point scale, the 7.2, the 9.1, the 5.4. That’s what you’re lookin’ for you know, that’s what you’re lookin’ for. And then there’s the balance
of risk and practicality. So many people are not
born with the risk gene of an entrepreneur. You’re just not willin’
to take the chance, it’s just too scary. I just don’t know the other way. It was too scary not to get F’s for me. I’ve always fought the system. I can’t conform to what
people think is right. It’s just not how I see the
world, it’s just not what I see. So, I think tripling down on you. If you found out you’re not entrepreneur, you probably weren’t
self-aware to begin with to realize that you weren’t
gonna win in that anyway. You’re probably just following
a narrative of what’s sexy or what’s attractive and you need to take a big boy, big girl
step back in your life and say okay let’s get really real with ourselves. What is the thing I’m best
at that I like the most and then triple down on that. Put yourself in that position. Quit your job or quit the failed startup and go start whittling
wood ’cause you might just be great at it and you can
sell the goddamn little statues in an amazing museum shop in Wyoming. Be happy as goddamn hell. Make a good buck. You’re one Instagram photo
away from somebody saying look how amazing this is. Now you’re the wood
whittlinger for the celebrities and like this is real,
you know but this is real. This is how shit goes down and it’s funny and I know it’s a funny thing. I’m glad I got you India but
what do you think happened with DJ’s? They just loved it so much
and so they made 500 bucks on the side at parties. DJ AM, I watch Doc U, and
then he became the one that did it for Madonna’s parties and then he got paid a million
dollars to be the DJ in residence in Vegas. Funny things happen when you
triple down on your strengths. A lotta times the world comes to you. A lotta times the world comes to you. It may not seem like you
can make, too many people are like I’m awesome
at this and I love this but it doesn’t make a lotta money. I hate that because that is
the place to go ’cause all of a sudden the world comes to you. 1979 I’m a great chef and I
love cooking more than life but I’m not gonna be a chef
because it only pays $50,000 at this restaurant and I’m the help. Yeah until that 22 year old then in 1995 is 37 and celebrity chefs are now a thing and she has her own show. I mean like, that’s what I think. Cool, that was fun,

“dear Gary, in episode 122 you say at 22 to 24 don’t settle. “What is the settling age? “I thought you should never settle?” – That’s so weird that’s so funny. – That’s coming right from something he told you. – Yes, yes. What’s interesting is we just talked about it though how I just […]

“dear Gary, in episode 122 you
say at 22 to 24 don’t settle. “What is the settling age? “I thought you should never settle?” – That’s so weird that’s so funny. – That’s coming right from
something he told you. – Yes, yes. What’s interesting is
we just talked about it though how I just said from 20 to 30 that’s funny that’s interesting timing. I think first of all I
think every goddamn answer on this show has to be very personal meaning, if you and your boyfriend or girlfriend. Have a baby when you’re both seventeen because that’s what happened in your life practicality enters your world. – Casey I was just at Casey’s. – That’s exactly right. Practicality comes knocking. What’s up man practicality here. You’re a different 17 year old because you have a child coming. – Something you’re going to know you’re going to have to raise a child. – So for every single
person that’s watching. I think practicality or settling, because they’re cousins they don’t have to be the exact same thing but their cousins in them, comes at different times. I do think. Look I know a lot of 40 to 50 year olds that are still living in outer space and dreaming. And I think there’s diminishing returns at some level around that. Especially if it hasn’t happened already. Unless their happy. Unless their happy. – But isn’t practicality
the thing you dip into because you can be living your dream. Pretending live in fantasy land but you’ve got to pay rent. You’ve got to eat. And sometimes that actually dip into real life. Is what motivates your passion. Those two things they. – That’s Casey’s favorite answer, right? – Is it? Casey’s favorite answer, I think he said in the show was do something you hate. to realize how much you
want to do something else. Go wash dishes like he did. – Unbelievably motivating. – What the thing you did the most, in your life, what’s the thing you did the most that you hated? – I went to school for fucking ever. – Yeah. – Forever. – From six to 18 I hated life. – That’s why I love it so much now. I’m not in fucking English class. – Seriously we got to put a
filter on this culturally. This is a real thing. People are going to college
for all the wrong reasons. Do you need a piece a paper that says you have to have
a piece of paper to cut someone open? I want my doctor to be certified. I want my airline pilot to be certified. Anything else? Why, maybe there’s some value there. If you’re exploring. If you’re trying to figure your shit out schools a reasonable thing. The average person graduates
college at $35,200 in debt. That’s the average. So for everybody who
graduates with only 10 grand, there’s someone who graduates with 50. That’s bullshit. – Preaching. I’ve been pumping out some serious content around this issue. So the answer is it
different for everybody. Some people get practical at 16. They don’t have that risk tolerance. – Or you figure it out. There is a practicality
when you figure out what you want to do. Then you got to get to work. Would you call that practical? – Here’s what I truly think. I think shit is really hitting the fan. The Internet, I don’t know if you’ve heard of it obviously all of us have, it’s only 20 years old. I know it’s been around for a long time. I know there’s nerds that say, I know. I mean when Windows 95 came out, normal people started
going on the Internet we are 20 years into this thing. This thing is fundamentally
the biggest culture shift of our time.
– For sure. – They’ve changed everything. We’re just starting and all the rules need to be thought about in a very aggressive way because there’s so many
alternatives to the way that we always thought. The amount of people that go to college Because that’s what their parents want because their parents were
sold on the propaganda of college before that– – It’s literally about
their ego most of the time. – 100 percent. – My son went to this, went to this. – I made a shirt called Shmarvard. That is literally my
number one selling t-shirt. It’s not even close. – I saw it. Is it blue? – Yes, yes. India? – I didn’t know the story that’s good. – [Voiceover] Isham asked,

“but don’t come close to achieving what I want, “will I have wasted my time?” – Go Chase. You can ask it again. – One more time. – [Voiceover] Malik asked, “If I pursue what I think “is my passion, but don’t come close to achieving “what I want, “will I have wasted my time?” […]

“but don’t come close to
achieving what I want, “will I have wasted my time?” – Go Chase. You can ask it again. – One more time. – [Voiceover] Malik asked,
“If I pursue what I think “is my passion, but don’t
come close to achieving “what I want, “will I have wasted my time?” – No because there’s really
only one thing in life is doing exactly. – The Jets, sorry go ahead. – Which is doing exactly what
you’re supposed to be doing. That doesn’t come from out here. I’ve lived this exact problem. I did what everybody else wanted me to do for the first chapter of my life. – Who was that? That your parents? – The world. – I agree, the market, the market. – Supposed to be a doctor, a lawyer or in some shit or something else and I literally. – Guys by the way who
are watching were old. Back then doctor lawyer was like. – You’re so smart. – Doctor, lawyer. – Yeah, respect. – When’s the last time an 18 year old now is like you should be a doctor or a lawyer. That’s like. – That profession is
going to run out of people to do the work. – It’s insane. That just took me to such a weird place. You should be a doctor or a lawyer or an accountant. Accountant was in the mix. – That was the list. My parents were amazingly supportive. This didn’t really come from my parents. But just culturally that’s where. – Your friend’s parents were sort a son of a bitch, right. I fucking hate the friends’ parents. – The counselor at school. – I never went to my
guidance counselor, ever. Four years of high school, never went. – They don’t know shit. They’re living in a different era. I don’t want to disrespect those folks. – I disrespect different era. – Different era. That being said I serve somebody else for a long time. Emotionally mentally
even trying to reconcile being an artist and athlete. That was because I was paying attention with the culture wanted for me. But that’s all bullshit. There’s only one thing. – Go ahead. Get them both. – You’re right there. There’s only one thing. You doing what you’re supposed
to be doing in the world. You can pay your dues. I have a lot of respect for working hard, digging ditches, doing stuff to survive. Practicality you call it. But let’s be real, you have to do the things that’s in here. Otherwise you’re just burning time. – I’m going to throw in addition, yes. In addition. – You always say yes and that’s what you’re supposed to do. – Is that the improv thing? – Yes, yes. – No but I will say this. (laughter) Countercultural Mike. Mike is just my fake name for general people. Self-awareness. My big thing more than anything is
do not live on regret. So I definitely am also on team being happy will always trump more money at the end at the end at the end. So I try to play that way. Luckily for me mine collided together. But if you know you. And you know like money like money. Like money. Like you just are obsessed by money. Then maybe you should do the thing that makes you the most money because you wouldn’t sit there one day and say damn I wish I was an artist. Now if you’re the other way. – That’s like this in here and you have to be honest
what you want to be. Do you want to be a needlepoint expert. But you want to make 10 million dollars. – That’s fake. – Those two things don’t go together. So you’ve got to be real. – I mean it’s self-awareness
like a reverse engineer yourself to not have regrets. Having regrets in your
70s, 80s and 90s is literally to me the worst thing that can happen in life for sure. – What’s the asker’s name? – Malik. – Malik, seriously in here. The answers are all in here. – Chase I will say this though and this is something
I’ve spent a lot of time with the show on. – Are we really going to go here? – Yes.
– Ok. – I do believe that you and I got lucky by having self-awareness and emotional intelligence isn’t you know. – It’s the new black. – For sure. By the way. It’s always been the black. It’s just being put front and center. – For sure. I just want to make sure
we’re giving practical advice saying like follow from what’s in here. I have family members who
literally have no fucking idea what’s in here. I know them cold. They have no idea. – That’s actually thing one is
you’ve got to figure it out. And the way they figure out is to live your life, get in adventures and do stuff. – You know what. I’m so on that. Test and learn between 20 and 30 to me is hot. I’m hot on this idea that if you really want to live the best life you can live. The new game plan is from 20 to 30 test a lot of things because the downside the risks you could go risky. You’ve got bigger upside than downside. – Classic Richard Branson. Mitigate the downside. That’s literally why Creative Live exists. So you can take thousands classes from the world’s best people. And you can literally dabble. And it’s not just dabble in community college, you’re taking it from
Pulitzer Prize winner, New York Times bestseller, this guy. Smart, smart people. Get you hands dirty. – We’re going to use for 17 hours Let’s go, India. (inaudible)

“on always wanting more in life? “Good, bad, and why?” – That’s a really good question. My point of view on this is both. Always wanting more in life seriously while being very very content and happy at the same time. That’s what I am. You know, this is something you may not know. Though […]

“on always wanting more in life? “Good, bad, and why?” – That’s a really good question. My point of view on this is both. Always wanting more in life seriously while being very very content
and happy at the same time. That’s what I am. You know, this is
something you may not know. Though I would be disappointed, and my ego, boy my ego
which is a nice part of me, would really take a hit,
if a little weird genie showed up right now, weird genie, got it? Boom! If the weird genie said to me, “Hey Gary, I’m the weird
genie of the future. “Bad news, you’re not
going to grow anymore! “This is it, you’ve plateaued!” I’d be like, oh! Like a big shot. But I’d be like, all right. Like, to me, like, I’ve
had a great run already. Like, I’ve done really well. And many people would be really happy to have these professional
accolades and successes as their entire life’s work. That would rip my heart
out of my body right now if that were to be true. You don’t have to animate
them ripping my heart out. No Mortal Kombat shit here. But it is probably
surprising to some of you because I don’t talk about it as much how content I actually am. And so my point of view on
it is a very strong balance of happiness and content
with what you’ve got while being very hungry and striving for real real victories and upside and the climb and the game. And so that’s where I’m at. And as you can imagine, as you’re probably listening to this, that makes me very happy. Like, it’s probably a big
reason I’m so damn happy. It’s a nice place to be.
